Aunty Kays Doggone Difficult Climb

Categories: Horse

Climb higher! It's not as easy as you think Miles! grumbled My Aunty Kay. Yes, I agree climbing with a dog DOES sound hard. Why did you suggest going for a walk here Mum? What were you thinking! Josh yelled. They were around the front then! protested my Aunt.  Calm down everyone, we just need to wait and think, said Jacob.

So time for some explaining? I think so. My family and my cousin's family ( and Josh's friend, Jacob) had come on a holiday to The Farm Stay.

So what about this climbing business? My brother Andy, my Mum and my other cousins had gone to a close friend's birthday party which conveniently was only an hour away from where we were staying.

There wasn't enough room in the car so I stayed behind. So it was me, my cousins and my Dad left behind. Except that my Dad had to go back to the city later in the afternoon for some important work.

For a while we played some board games, until Aunty Kay suggested a nice walk around the back of The Farm Stay.

We all thought we should, except Dad who had his important work to do. We made a promise to Aunty Kay check for those horses first because they meant trouble. They had a bad reputation for chasing people up the hills and cornering them there. So despite our great plans for a calm walk in the back paddock without the horses, there we were getting chased by horses.

.. With my cousin's dog Coco.

We all just sat there holding on to the slippery branches watching the horses, I mean the horse watching us. There were two horses: Midnight and Dawn. Midnight was the leader and seemed to suspect we were going to do something bad! Dawn on the other hand was more interested in following Midnight around and eating grass. Uncle Mitchell! Josh exclaimed Huh?!?  What I'm saying is he might not of left...Yet. So get out the phone Mum! motioned Miles.

Okay! ...began Aunty Kay. Speak in you head! said Miles.  Now put him on speaker phone so we can all hear h- Hello? asked Dad  Hi Mitchell, have you left the farm yet? Yes. Why? Did the pig escape again?!? No, but we are being chased- BY THE PIG! No! By horses.  Oh, sorry about that see you tonight.

Great, grumbled Miles. What now? I'm going to run across and see if I can do something, Jacob said. But before any of us could stop him he was half way across the paddock with the horses close behind. We all watched as Jacob jumped over the fence on the other side of the paddock. I bet he just wanted to get over there to get hot chocolate, not at all to help us.

I've just had a good idea! Half-yelled Aunty Kay. What is it? we all asked in unison. Two of us should run across lawn...with the dog, then come back and pick up the other two. We all agreed it was a great idea. So who's coming? Josh's hand shot high up into the air. I am not staying here any longer! Josh said.

After a while it seemed like they weren't coming back for us.  What if they never come back and it becomes night? I asked Miles. Well we'll take it in turns in staying awake and then we'll run back in the morning...if they don't come back. Yeah and then we can tell them that we are very mad about them not coming...if they are there. The same sort of thing went on for a while it started as a joke but I don't think it ended like a joke. Eventually we started to actually worry... Mum! Aunty Kay! Mum! Aunty Kay! Hurry up! Silence coldly answered us.

Finally a black car zoomed across the paddock and stopped before the tree. Get in the car Jen! yelled Aunty Kay sticking her head out of the car window. I slid down the tree, splinters making their way in to my hands. I didn't care, all I wanted was to get in the car. I jumped down to the end of the trunk, my hands stinging with pain, my eyes watering.

I reached for the car door, panting. Get back up the tree now! The horses are coming closer again! Aunty Kay's scream rung in my ears. I turned around and ran to the base of the tree and climbed up the slippery trunk. I had almost reached safety when I slipped. I held on with one hand to a slippery branch screaming. The horses were right beneath me.

Pain rushed down my back and sweat trickled down my forehead. Screams and cries echoed all around me. I felt dizzy. My fingers slipped I was going to fall... Miles' hands pulled me back up on to the tree. Aunty Kay tooted the car horn at the horses but they thought the toot meant food since the farmer had taught them that. So they only moved closer. That's it! yelled Josh and he pushed Aunty Kay out of the driver's seat.

He pushed down hard on the accelerator and reversed backwards towards the horses. You're going to kill them and you don't even have your driver's license. That's illegal- said a shocked Aunty Kay. Settle down Mum! demanded Josh, as the horses backed away.  Miles, Jennifer, get down the tree quickly! directed Josh as we slid down and ran to the car door. The car door burst open before we got there and Jacob yelled at us to get inside. We climbed inside the car and did up our seat belts as fast as we could.

That night we all crowed around the bonfire laughing over our adventure.
