The Histories of Various Societies Have Faced Both Crises and Conflicts

Crisis and conflict included disease, war, and social unrest. These conflicts either brought societies to an end or helped them to grow. This can be reflected in the rise and fall of the Roman republic. The Roman republic was brought to an end due to various crisis and conflicts that could not be overcome. At the Time Rome consisted of two groups of people the Patricians and the Plebeians. The Patricians were a small group of approximately 130 aristocratic families and the rest of the citizens besides the 130 families were the Plebeians.

These two groups were constantly conflicting with one another. The Plebeians desired farmland as well as the ability to be represented in the justice system.

In order to put pressure on the Patricians the Plebeians periodically refused military service. This worked because Rome's army depended on the Plebeians to help them to be successful in conquering new land and gaining wealth. Many efforts for fair representation were unsuccessful, this resulted in the Plebeians creating the Twelve Tables.

Twelve Tables was the first example of written Roman law created between 451 B.C.E and 449 B.C.E. that prevented the Patrician judges from giving judgments in legal cases in regards to their own wishes. This was the first attempt to create a fair justice system. In 287 B.C.E. the struggle of the orders ended when the Plebeians won the right to make laws in their own assembly. However, Plebeians still lacked rights that they desired which continued to cause internal conflict between the two groups.

The Gracchus brothers began fighting for the Plebeians rights represented in the Gracchan Reforms 133 B.C.E. At this time war has began to take an economic toll on the roman republic. Veterans and other Roman citizens were struggling to survive and many were displaced from their farmland. The wealthy Patricians did not want to give up their land to the Plebeians as the Gracchus brothers were suggesting by redistributing the land. The efforts of the Gracchus brothers were not appreciated by the Patricians seeing these efforts as threatening to both their status and wealth. This resulted in the Gracchus brothers being killed. This caused a lot of internal conflict and weakened the Roman republic as a whole this amongst various other factors brought the roman republic to an end.

Throughout these times of crisis and conflict the Roman republic was expanding their territory and their wealth. The Expansion of territory both helped and hurt the Roman republic because they lacked stability among their people the expansion was not connected. A focus on successes by Roman politicians and military leaders became more important than the republic itself. Many changes and developments were going on while the Roman republic was developing however, with change also comes conflict. If a society is not connected they can not overcome the various points of crisis and conflict that occur. We see this in many societies throughout our history. Although the Roman republic was not successful it lead to the Roman empire and various other societies that developed ideas that are still used today. Without the conflicts and crisis that we deal with throughout society we would not be able to grow and learn from them weather it makes or breaks us.
