“The Giver” Epilogue

The Wakening

Jonas was startled at first. He had awoken to find himself in a bed. The room was warm and he felt a feeling of comfort. He was wrapped in a warm blanket, and he was wearing new clothes. Beside him was a small table with a glass of water on it. He looked around. Gabriel was not in the room. On the wall was a window and he saw that it was light outside. Jonas heard voices on the other side of the door. Someone began to open the door. He laid back down with his eyes open as an elderly women walked in with some hot soup. She went beside him and asked how he was feeling. She stroked his hair with her delicate comforting hand. “Hello, my name is Jonas, I am feeling better than before.” He said, trying to sound friendly. “Where is Gabe?” Jonas asked. The women helped him up and they walked out of the room together.

Jonas saw a girl. She was holding the baby and rocking him in her arms. Jonas went over and she handed Gabriel to him. Jonas smiled. It had been a long time since he had smiled. He didn’t know where he was but he was happy he was there. The girl said her name was Leonna. She had long blond hair and her eyes were as blue as the sky. Jonas thought she was about his age.

This is my grandmother she told him. Jonas was filled with delight. He had met a grandparent. “What is your name?” he asked Leonna’s grandmother. “You may call me Mrs. Parker.” She replied.

Choosing five

In the community, things were very chaotic. The giver had gathered everyone into the auditorium. “Now” he said. Our reciever in training has left us once again, a tear ran down his cheek. He longed for Rosemary, and Jonas. But he continued. “I would like for everyone to try and grasp something. Please stay quiet. Think of a time that you are walking in a field of green grass, the fresh air.” Everyone was silent, they attempted to pull forth this memory. Then, the giver told them to raise their hand in the air if they remembered. He had been teaching them these memories since the morning after memories were coming back into the community. They had learned the
colors, and so many other things.

The giver had been recording the progress of each of the citizens made at each session every day. He thought they were ready to take the final test. The next day, one by one, every citizen came to take their individual exam. They each had to meet privatly with the giver. It was Fionna’s turn now. She was doing very well handling each memory. The giver liked Fionna, she reminded him of his own daughter sometimes. “Your first question, What do you think this is called?” He pressed play on his music player. A melody played. Fionna said “music.” She liked music, the giver knew it, he could see it in her eyes as it played. Once Fionna had finished her exam, many more citizens came. The following hours were long, but necessary.

Why Am I Here?

Jonas asked Mrs. Parker why he was here. “Well, while Leonna was gathering firewood, she saw bike handles sticking out from the snow. She tried to dig you out, but then a blizzard started. She rushed home and told me of her discovery. She said she thought there was someone burried there, so we got our shovels and dug you out. In your arms was a baby, who was so cold we thought he wouldn’t make it. So, that is how you got here.” The door opened, a man and a woman stepped in. Leonna hugged both of them and welcomed them inside. They were Leonna’s parents. They looked puzzled when they saw the two boys, they asked who they were.

Every one sat down on the couches and Mrs. Parker explained everything. “Do you have a home?” Leonna’s dad asked. “No, all I remember was that I had left the community so all the memories would be released to the people, I was the reciver of memory, in training.” Jonas replied. “Well, I guess you are wondering what this place is then. We are a village of people who stayed separate from the community, to live the life of the past.” Leonna’s mother said. ” You may live with us if you wish, we have an extra room and you and the baby may stay there”. Leonn’s dad told Jonas. “Thank you, we will stay”. Jonas said.

The new leaders

The giver had made his decision. The community gathered in the auditorium and the giver said “Fionna, James, Katherine, Roy, and Lucy please come to the stage”. They did as instructed. “You will be the new leaders of the new community”. The giver said for everyone to hear. Fionna was amazed. Her of all people, a leader.

The community was restored, almost, to the way it was before sameness and climate control. The new leaders decided it was best to get rid of cars for good. Fionna left after eight years, because she wanted to start her own life. She searched for her friend Jonas. She made her way to a small village, and after all those years she had finally found him.

my friend

It had been a long eight years. Jonas had found work in the village as a farmer. Since he had turned twenty, he was living in his own house. Gabriel wanted to stay with Leonna’s family, so Jonas lived alone.

One day while he was working in the fields, he saw the familiar red hair of Fionna. They ran to each other and Jonas prepared them lunch in his new house. Fionna told him of her life, and Jonas told her of his. They decided to get married the following summer.

In two years Jonas was a father. Fionna had given birth to identical twin boys. One was named Mason and the other was named Conner.
