The Flow of K-12 Program in School Levels
The change of our social lives needs a standard of teaching that can go with us. the K to 12 education system is a new educational program in the Philippines that is originated in U.S.A, and this program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education that is composed of six years in elementary, six years in high school that is also composed of four years in junior high and two years in senior high school that will provide a sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills. The flow of K-12 program in school levels develops students for a lifelong learning for they are already sharpened in kindergarten, elementary, and in high school.
First of all, a child starts his/her education in kindergarten at the age of five and he/she is given a time to adjust to a formal education. In Kindergarten, the topics of the children are usually the alphabet, the numbers, the different shapes, and different colors. They will learn their topic through different games, songs, and dances using their Mother Tongue language so that the child is well prepared when he/she goes to primary education and learning Mother Tongue is also important because it will help the students to easily learn Filipino and English.
After kindergarten, a child will go in the elementary level and the child will start on grade one, followed by grade two, and three. The subjects of the students are usually the mother tongue language, English, math, Filipino, history, values, MAPEH(music, art, PE, and health), and Science but science will not be introduce in grade 1 and 2. Starting from grade four up to grade six, the mother tongue will no longer be tackled. English, math, Filipino, history, values, science, MAPEH, and EPP (Educasiyon ng Pantahan at Panlipunan) are the subjects that will be introduce on the students but EPP will be tackled in grade six and will be replaced by TLE (Technology and Livelihood Education). After graduating in elementary level, the students will go in junior high school and they will start in grade 7 up to grade 10. The subjects of students in junior high school are the same when they are in elementary but the subjects are more challenging.
After 2 years in junior high, the students will go to senior high. Senior High School or the grade eleventh and twelfth is a two years of specialization of the upper secondary education. In this level, students are allowed to choose a specialization based their aptitude, interests, and school capacity. In this level, the students will choose which career track they will get. Every student in Senior High School can choose among the three tracks that are; Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. The Academic track includes three ways that are Business, Accountancy, Management (BAM); Humanities, Education, Social Sciences (HESS); and Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM). The new education program known as k-12 is more organized than the old one that we had and it is a global standard of education for it was tried in other countries and was effective to use; so it is important to us to help our government on the program for us also to rise from a low standard curriculum rather than to always contradict on it so that it is easy for them to do the job.
The students of the old curriculum vs the students of k-12 curriculum
The change of our social lives needs a standard of teaching that can go with us. The old curriculum (2002 Basic Education Curriculum “BEC” Reform) covers 1 year kindergarten, 6 years in elementary, and 4 years in high school while the K-12 program covers kindergarten, 6 years in elementary, six years in high school that is also composed of four years in junior high and two years in senior high school. The students of the old curriculum and students of k-12 are different such as in job hiring, ranking, and competitiveness.
In job hiring, there are news saying that there are Filipinos under the old curriculum who are working abroad that can not apply his/her finished program like if he/she graduated as a nurse and he/she works to clean the appliances in medication for the reason that their education is lock for 2 years. This issue will be solved with the help of k-12, for the k-12 program is a world standard curriculum for there are many countries that use it.
According in the article of De Leon (2012), in the 2010-2011 Global Competitiveness Report in the nine Southeast Asian nations in matter of education and innovation, showed that our country ranked poor. This ranking showed that our old curriculum has issues that have to be solved and the changes are really needed for the improvement of our quality education. Thus, the k-12 program is the solution for it is more decongested and focused because students will have more time in learning core academic areas.
In k-12 program, students are able to be more competitive for they are given sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills because the students are allowed to choose when they reach senior high school. The students will choose their specialization based their aptitude, interests, and school capacity unlike in our old curriculum. K-12 education system will help to aid our country’s quality education to be able to produce graduates that are well thought and well trained for it was tried in other countries and was effective to use. So we have to support our government on the program for us also to rise rather than always contradicting on it; so that it is easy for them to do the job.
The Effects of a Poor Education
The K-12 can help to uplift the poor education that will also result to uplift the economy. Poor education is one of the main problems in the country for the economy is affected on it. The effects of poor education in the country result in 3 bad outcomes such as incompetence of students, unemployed graduates, and poor economy.
One of the results of our poor education in the country is that the incompetence of a student to other countries that has a quality of education. The Nine Southeast Asian Nation in the area of education and innovation showed us what kind of quality education we had. The result of this ranking showed that our quality of education is poor for our rank is on the 7th place out of the 9 countries such as Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam got the top 6 and the Columbia and Laos got the 8th and 9th.
Unemployed graduates, one of the reasons why our graduates can’t perform their finished course is that they are lock in two years of education in contrast on the quality of education that most countries had that is the k-12 which is the world standard of quality education today. Another reason why graduates not be hired is the incompetence; it led companies not to hire a product of a school or a country due to the poor education that they had and their performance in any academic competitions for companies wants assure that the person whom they will hire is fit on the job for it is on this person whom they will give the trust for the future of their company.
Another effect of a poor education is the poor economy, incompetence and unemployment is the two main causes resulting to a poor economy for if we are incompetent then there are no investors that will come to invest in our country, if there are no investors that will invest in the country then there will be no more opportunities for the people that will result to unemployment, and unemployment will result to poor economy for people will get less income because the FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) is one that helps a community to progress.
Developing the education in the country can improve the economy of the Philippines for if the quality education in the country will improve then more investors will hire Filipinos and will have a trust on their capabilities if they see that they are competitive for investors always wanted a competitive worker that they can trust for the benefits of their company. This helps the economy of the country for if there are more investors then there is more work to come and if there are more work then it can lessen unemployment in the country.
Why We Need to Support K-12 Program?
In order for a program to be successful in a community then it needs the support of the people. The K to 12 education system is originated in U.S.A, and this program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education that is composed of six years in elementary, six years in high school that is composed of four years junior high and two years in senior high that will provide a sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills. The k-12 program is proposed to raise the quality education of Filipino students and graduates that needs to be supported by people in 3 reasons that is life-long learning for the students, occupation in abroad, and youth unemployment rate.
According to DepEd, K-12 education also develops students for a lifelong learning, and prepares graduates for tertiary education, employment, and entrepreneur graduates. The purpose of the two years of senior high school is to provide time for the students to make stronger their specializations. This curriculum aims to fully enhance and develop Filipino students in order for them to be well-prepared especially in emotional and in mental aspects for they will be able to face the pressures that will come on their future jobs.
We all knew that Philippines is the largest export of OFW’s and there are instances that Filipino’s needed to continue their education abroad in order to get the profession that they wanted because they are lock in two years of education in high school that they get rejected. With the help of K-12 system, the fairness will be achieved that Filipinos can also become foreign students or workers abroad that are also the same in other countries when they work here in our country. During the old curriculum the wage of foreign workers here and in other countries is higher than us for the reason that they have a higher education. It will be now the same because our curriculum (k-12) is a global standard of education today.
According to the World Bank’s survey, the country had a highest rate of youth unemployment. One of the main targets of K-12 is to reduce the rate of youth unemployment. K-12 program will give the quality of education and it will also match on the global standards of education. The result of this program can decrease unemployment rate and there would be many opportunities for Filipino students or graduates for if we had a quality of education then more employers will hire our graduates.
K-12 education system will help to improve our country’s quality education to be able to produce graduates that are well thought and well trained for it was tried in other countries and was effective to use so we have to support our government on the program for us also to rise rather than to contradict on it; so that it is easy for them to do the job.
