The Difference of Courtship Practices from Spanish Era to the Modern Times

In 2002 study entitled “E-Courtship: A Descriptive Study” by Pamela Concepcion Panganiban, she explained that when two human beings start developing emotional attachments to one another, the relationship often turns from simple friendship to a romantic kind (Tucker, 2008) and once feelings are established between the two parties, the individual then pursues the person his or her interest (Tucker, 2008).

It is therefore appropriate to say that when an individual, much like male, pursues a female, it signifies the act of courtship (Akiteng, N.

D.).
Courtship is the activity where people build a trust, unconditional love, successful, and romantic relationship that could lead to a marriage. The courtship maintains the relationship healthy and far from toxic. It provides sweetness and commitment in a relationship.

The traditional courtship here in the Philippines is known to be more conservative kind of approach compared to westernized culture. Man’s effort must be showed to the family of the lady and must follow specific rules in order to marry the woman he loves.

Courtship is one of the things they’ve influenced, the Filipino’s and the Spaniards have almost the same style in courting woman (knoll, 2017). Courtship was known in the Philippines as Panliligaw or ligawan but, in some Tagalog-speaking region in the Philippines, it also is known as Pandidiga or digahan. It is derived from the Spanish which means to “to express or to say”.

The manliligaw was indicated to a man who attempts to court a woman to seek her for a marriage. Moreover, nililigawan is indicated to a woman who is being pursued or the one being courted. In Spanish Era, the courtship was practiced by the giving value of courting a woman and also the Family of the woman that being courted (The Evolution of courtship).

Before the man should give a respect and honor to a woman and the woman should control and limit her feelings towards the man; because courtship before is very conservative. The man should ask permission to a woman’s parent to court their daughter because it is the most important thing that a man should do before he court the girl because man is not allowed to court the girl without the permission of her parents.

The man should bring some foods in the girl’s house by wooing also the family of a girl. If the parents agree to court their daughter, the man would ask to serve or help woman’s family. In the Philippines, it is called as “paninilbihan”. The man would help in the household work which is chopping fire woods, fetching water, helping the father or relative of a woman in the farm, and other work that is usually done by a male family member.

Harana is also one thing to court the girl; the man would sing a love song in front of a girl’s house. Directly talking with each other is very limited because conversing with each other is considered as a culture- breaking and breaking rules because the woman should preserve her demure and poise especially in courting stage. The girl uses fans or handkerchief to hide her reaction to a boy.

The girl can tell a boy if she is interested or not interested to the boy by the way of folding the fan and opening the fan it can convey if she doesn’t want to talk anymore, that is the fan language in courting stage. The man is not allowed to touch the woman during courtship. If the boy aggressively kissed the girl, the parents of a girl will force the boy to marry their daughter (B, 2012).
