The Corruption In Prisons

Abuse and physical maltreatment run uncontrolled through the US jail framework by the individuals who are put there to guard detainees, but others will argue that the abuse is caused by inmates who are not well behaved. We will focus on what causes corruption, where is it originating from and how can we limit it. Crooks are sent to remedial offices with an end goal to keep the general population safe, and in addition to plan convicts to act common once discharged again into society.

Be that as it may, while they are kept, numerous jail officers treat them with badgering and physical maltreatment, making further doubt among prisoners and expert figures.

In this research, we will want to concentrate on which side whether it's the correction workers or inmates that need to be controlled better i order for corruption in prisons to deter. This criminal justice issue is important because in our criminal justice system we have many different sections, but incarceration is one of the biggest ones.

In the United States if corruption is going on in the prisons and not being addressed properly it might cause other sections to start being corrupt. The United States goal when putting someone in prison is for rehabilitation and for them to go back into society be productive citizens, but that is hard to do when prisoners are surrounded by corruption while they are incarcerated.

In the united states we spend 31,000 on average on just one inmate, prisons is a huge business.

If we the taxpayer are contributing our hard-working money for inmates in prison, the last thing that a person will want is for prisoners or the guards to be involved in any sort of corruption and illegal act. We have many unanswered questions, and more research and policies needed to restrict corruption. We need a penalty and a serious punishment to decrease the corruption going on. A policy that focuses on corruption in prisons and trying to deal with it in the best way possible. We need our prison to decrease crimes not rise it.

In spite of broad screening of new workers, defilement keeps on being a pervasive issue among remedial staff. Defilement can come from representatives at all dimensions, from officers to overseers.  The most well-known type of defilement in jails is trying to sneak in contraband. Many organizations and individuals have done their on research relating to corruption in prisons. Findings of previous researcher they have found that corruption can be split up to two sections which is contraband smuggling and inmates and correctional officers having inappropriate relations. The “Center for The Advancement of Public Integrity at Columbia Law School” have stated that inappropriate relations between inmates and prison officials including smuggling on contrabands are not easy to fix.

In addition from them realizing that this is a huge issue and will take time to fix it, they offer programs that help deter corruption and improve the capacity of public officials. This program is also the process of trying to develop resources that will help public officials deal with corruption. Many researchers while researching to deter corruption in prison they focused on the correctional officer and his behavior and mental state. In a peer review article called “Occupational burnout, Corrections Today” by Adwell S. and Miller L, they have found that in previous research correctional officers stress levels affect their interactions with their co-workers and also their physical and mental health. Adwell and Miller decided to conduct their own research on how correctional officers' stress level affects their perceptions of inmates.

The way that they conducted their research was by surveying 501 correctional officers who are employed by the Southern prison system. In the article it mentions that “Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to test the principal hypothesis of this study.” in a result to their research they realize that the more correctional officers have a negative perception of inmates the stress the correctional officer will be. This result makes me question if it shows that the correctional officer has more control over their stress they receive from their job, or does the inmate directly causes stress even if the correctional officer perception of the inmate is positive. This research this not fully answer if this causes corruption, but it highlighted that the correction officer mindset towards inmates link to how effective his behavior towards them will be.

A similar study was conducted in an article called. “Correctional Officers and Domestic Violence: Experiences and Attitude” written by Valentine,Colby;Oehme,Karen;Martin, Annelise. In this research they decided to focus on correctional officers attitude and personal experience about domestic violence. Online reviews were regulated to Florida prison guards soliciting an arrangement from inquiries, including their convictions and frames of mind about the pervasiveness of aggressive behavior at home among associates, and their youth and grown-up encounters with abusive behavior at home. Results from 710 officers uncovered that 33 % of respondents thought about prison guards who had submitted unreported aggressive behavior at home;

30 % revealed that they had straightforwardly experienced abusive behavior at home as kids; and more than 11 % detailed that they had been physically brutal with a close accomplice. These result in this research than made the researchers think if this should be some sort of evaluation before someone is giving a correctional officer job. The study focused mainly on domestic violence on correctional officers, this research is not completely over because now we need to focus on if correctional officers who are involved in domestic violence end up being involved in the corruption in prison, than that is a way to change the requirements individuals will need before becoming a correctional officer.

A theory that links to these findings is that a person who experience abuse have a high chance of doing it to others especially if they hold a high position. This theory correlates with the findings of the previous article on correctional officers and their experience with domestic violence because correctional officers have authority over inmates, so will this most likely lead to some sort of abuse against the inmate because of their domestic violence experience. This opens up another research that will need to be conducted and analys. Another study focuses on correctional officers and its behavior. The article is called “Does Work Stress Change Personalities? Working in Prison as a Personality-Changing Factor Among Correctional Officers.

Criminal Justice and Behavior”, in this article it explains that correctional officers are working very stressful facilities, the longer they have worked in the facilities their personality start to change overtime and also the higher the level of neuroticism. This sort of research can cause officers to not produce proper work, and while working with inmates it takes up so much energy and you definitely need to be in the right state of mind. If a great percentage of correctional officers are dealing with neuroticism they might lash out on inmates, or even let certain behavior that are not acceptable be tolerated. In the article, “Deterring Corruption by Prison Personnel: A Principle-Based Perspective” in article unlike the other article focuses more on how to detare corruption instead of focusing on individuals and their backgrounds. This article talks about defilement in U.S. jail foundations and proposes successful techniques to deflect its continuation.

Dissimilar to other research that has upheld expanding agony and severity, this article shows a standard-based methodology, not frail, gutless, or delicate but rather without a doubt sincere, undaunted, and all around taught. It adjusts the continuum between strengthening balanced and sensible guidelines to control the conduct of prisoners and develop and proficient execution by edified prison guards. This article depends on a strong suspicion: The more thoughtful the remedial establishment is, the more affable, and the less savage, its inhabitants will be. It doubts the customary conviction that most jail detainees are subhumans who can be controlled just by brutality, see just the mash of power, and disdain the widespread standards of reasonableness, respect, and humankind. This article closes by introducing a couple of down-to-earth recommendations to help prison administration perform their duties more effectively and civilly.
