Categories: Carpe Diem

Almost everyone you go to will have an answer if you ask the question, “What does the phrase Carpe Diem mean?” and that’s because you hear the phrase in all sorts of media. The media portrays the phrase in ways that appeal to many different age groups. Even children

could grasp the concept of Carpe Diem if you gave them the quote, “seize your moment.” from the movie Coco. Truly, the phrase Carpe Diem when used in so many situations, everyone could find a way to interpret the phrase to their liking.

One might say that “Carpe Diem” is a media contagion, making its way from film, to song, to literature.

In addition to the movie Coco, there are also many other forms of media where the theme of Carpe Diem is mentioned. One example would be the film The Dead Poet’s Society. In this movie, there is a scene where the teacher is trying to mentor his students to, “Seize

the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.” Adding that on to Coco’s message of seizing the moment, and you’ve bridged a generational gap with a movie from the 80s to a movie from 2017.

Even the music industry is plagued with the well known phrase, for example “Living in the Moment” by Jason Mraz, is a pop song about letting go of the past and living life to its fullest while you still can. While In The End by Linkin Park is a melancholic punk

song about how nothing really matters in the end, so why not do as you please.

Two separate genres, pop and punk, brought together by a prevalent couple of words.

You don’t have to watch movies or listen to music to hear Carpe Diem either. It can even be found in literature. In the poem, The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, the Shepherd wants to make the most of his life by spending it with someone whom he finds attractive.

In the contrasting poem, The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd, the lady he’s trying to pursue writes back in another poem. She states how if every man were telling the truth, she may trust his advances, but even then, time still passes and she cannot be his love.

In short, the phrase “Carpe Diem” can be used as a conversation starter for any group of people you put in a room together. The phrase has been universal since its creation, and will continue to stand the lengths of time. This phrase truly seizes the day.
