What are the most important elements of the Affordable Care Act in relation to community and public health? The most important element of the Affordable Care Act is improving quality and lowering healthcare cost, access to healthcare and new consumer protection. (hhs.gov., 2014) The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is designed to improving quality and lowering healthcare cost through free preventive screening, discount medication for medicare patients, and protections against healthcare fraud.(hhs.gov., 2014) ACA helps rural communities to have access to healthcare through small clinics and critical access hospitals. As well as, consumer protection against pre-exising clause for children and consumer assistance hotline or through public health clinic. (hhs.gov.,2014) The ACA help millions of uninsured Americans to obtain insurance through the market place. It has provided funding to promote healthy lifestyles and disease prevention to all communities especially the rural areas.
The role of the Community/Public Health nurse is to perform community assessment of health issues and needs. After the assessment the Community/Public Health nurse develops a plan and implement it. Then evaluate the outcome. The Community/ Public Health nurse primary role is education. The nurse provides information to the individual, communities, groups to empower them to make inform decisions on lifestyle changes and disease prevention. As well as, perform wellness screening and preventive care such as immunizations.
