The Accident That Changed Everything in My Life

I always enjoyed taking a car ride, just about anywhere, ever since I was a little girl. I remember my dad driving the 275 loop from Cincinnati, Oh all the way through Kentucky and back. The main goal for the trip around the “loop” for my dad was to put us to sleep, it did wonders for my sister, but me not so much. Give or take my sister, Alexus, would scream her head off for about an hour prior to finally passing out.

Her wailing and screaming sounded like the grinding of old breaks that needed to be changed. I was reluctant and never truly intended on falling asleep I was too fascinated in all the different cars, people, signs, and different landscapes I could see from the highway. I always wondered how many creative minds it took to come up with the vast variety of signs and vehicles I saw. Before falling asleep I would look at my dad and just know that we were going to make it home okay.

My dad is an exceptional driver, I always felt comfortable and at ease when he was driving.

The older I got the more interested I got in getting behind the wheel and experiencing more than just observing the scenery. I was 15 the first time I drove, it was a remarkable feeling. I rolled all the windows down to feel the cool September breeze, as I drove off the revving of the engine sounded like a familiar voice whispering in your ear.

I couldn’t drive on the highway yet because I didn’t completely feel comfortable merging, so I stayed on the back streets. It was a pleasant experience. After that night I really didn’t drive too much, my sister did most of the driving because she got her license first. We would drive all the time and sometimes just drive and have no destination. I enjoyed the ride more than the actual destination. I had an uneasy feeling almost every time my sister drove. She made me feel uncomfortable, but I kept telling myself that everything was going to be okay and she would get better in time. That uneasy feeling never stopped me from getting in the car with her, really wish it would’ve. On a typical summer evening Alexus wanted to go see her boyfriend, Rider, and she didn’t want anyone going with her, but I begged and pleaded to go along for the ride. Reluctantly she said yes, so we hit the road.

At the time we lived in Sharonville, Ohio so we headed toward south 75, it was a little after 8pm, the sun was beginning to set. The sun was hiding behind a group of puffy clouds that looked like marshmallows right when you’re putting them in the fire, and u can barely see the flames sneaking around it. I was so amazed that I didn’t even realize my sister had started talking. “What are you doing over there?” she asked I said huh? “You were over there in a daze!” She was laughing hysterically as if I just slipped on ice. I didn’t quite understand what was so funny, but I let her have her fun, she has always seemed to march to a beat of a different drummer. As we got off the highway we got caught at the red light, right before we could make our left turn and be on our way. A strange older man looked as if he had no particular purpose or destination walked up and tapped on her window, “Can ya by chance spare a dolla seventy-five so I can get on the bus?” My sister didn’t even have a chance to respond when the light flashed from red to green and as we pulled off I could hear the man yell “Have a blessed day!”.

In Bond hill, a neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio where Rider lived, the streets tend to go from nice houses to ran down homes in a blink of an eye like in Florida how it rains on one side of the street and not the other. We finally pulled up outside and I noticed nothing more than an ordinary brick house with a chimney that had smoke billowing out of it like a serpent trying to escape sudden death. We arrived about 15 minutes early, as always. Have you ever heard of fashionably late? My sister is always fashionably early. Rider showed up and we all hung out for a little bit until he got a phone call. “I’m so sorry, I’ll be right there.” As he hung up the phone he told my sister he had to leave and ensured us that he would be back in a short period of time. We waited and waited for about 30 minutes and then Alexus was becoming impatient, so she insisted that we go ahead and go home. As we got on the highway everything was moving smoothly until we hit a traffic jam. The traffic was moving about 35mph until we came to a complete stop. “I can’t believe we aren’t moving at all. Stupid people probably had an accident because of all this bottle necking.” She said. I just looked at her and continued to watch the cars fly past us in the emergency lane. They were going so fast one came right after another until finally there was a break in the line and my sister noticed and asked me if I thought it was a good idea to follow them to the exit. I tried to explain to her that it was a terrible idea to be a follower in this case and that we weren’t that far from the exit. “We could go in the emergency lane and be there in 2 minutes rather than wait 20 minutes to move 40 feet.

” She explained. I was tired of going back and forth with her, so I told her to do whatever she wanted to, and she did. We waited for all the cars to go by us and then waited a few extra seconds to make sure nobody else was coming and pulled out. There was no sign of anymore cars coming in the fire lane, but all I could see when I turned around was a blurry array of headlights. When I turned back around we were going under the under pass and my sister got scared so she sped up to a little more than 50mph and I was looking out the window trying to see my favorite sign, the golden arches, and as I looked back in front of me I seen a car pull out right in front of us. I yelled ALEXUS! SLAM! Everything went black, but I don’t recall closing my eyes, I saw headlights and then SLAM! I woke up the second time with my sister frantically yelling my name, “Blakeley! Blakeley! Are you alright? I nodded my head in disbelief of what just happened. “We have to get out of the car. Come on.” She started grabbing everything out of the glove box, her wallet, and her purse. As I started getting out of the car a man pulled up next to us and asked if we were alright and I didn’t even say anything I just took off running. I was so scared that somebody was hurt, but I couldn’t really worry about that at the time, my sister told me to run, so that’s what I had to focus on. It was so dark I could barely see my sister who was only a few feet in front of me. As we were running in the grass there was a fence lining the side of the highway separating the highway and the woods.

As I could feel my blood coursing through my veins as my hands were shaking and time just seemed to slow down, almost completely come to a halt, I spotted a hole in the fence. I grabbed my sister and shoved her through the gate with not one word exchanged between the two of us. Finally, we found our way out of the woods and found ourselves in a trucking yard. As we were making our way through the truck yard my sister called rider and told him where we were and that we needed to be picked up now. After setting up plans to be picked up we left the trucking yard and were walking down the street a cop drove by us real slow and I thought for sure he was going to hit his lights and get us, fortunately he kept driving. All of a sudden, I started feeling my chest get really tight and a crushing feeling that was consuming me and was so hard to escape. It was a feeling I have never felt before in my life, it was crippling, but once we were in the car with Rider it subsided, and I felt relieved. My sister went to the hospital shortly after, but I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of explaining what happen, considering I was 16 and hated explaining myself, I went ahead and got dropped off at home. After this day I continued to have that feeling and eventually learned that it was anxiety.

I could no longer enjoy driving or just riding in a vehicle as I once did as a child. When I turned 18 I decided it was time to get a little help with this problem, but every time I would talk to my family doctor she always suggested this pill and that pill for my anxiety, I’m just not into that. I don’t like taking any type of medication unless it’s absolutely necessary, which in this case I didn’t think it was necessary when I could just deal with it. I suffered for many years with anxiety and learned to cope with it the best way I could. Nothing seemed to take the anxiety away until I started reading a book called “Resisting Happiness” by Mathew Kelly. To make this short, it’s about a boy’s journey to having a close relationship with god and becoming a better version of himself. After reading this book I began my own journey in building a relationship with the lord, I started trying to read the bible every day and pray the lord would help take my anxiety away. After a few months I met the love of my life, Bill, and after many months of talking to the lord and giving all my worries and problems to him my anxiety slowly went away. Just last year my anxiety has dwindled too little to nothing and I have started enjoying the different sceneries, cars, and my favorite sign, the golden arches, again like I did before the accident.
