This is only an experimental research which is not medically proven by the experts; still we could not find scientific evidence to prove that it can indeed treat the deadly dengue viral disease. This study aimed to know the benefits of tawa-tawa decoction to a dengue fever patient that showing a symptom of low platelet count due to excessive bleeding. But we advised the best remedy for patients with clear manifestations of early dengue symptoms is to seek immediate consultation and must not wait for the disease to worsen.
Dengue cases have been expected to rise during the rainy season if prevention is not observed. Dengue is a virus that transmitted by mosquitoes. Philippines are one of the country that has many people died because of dengue viral disease. Some Filipino people are using tawa-tawa as herbal medicine which is indigenous plant that is considered as one of the most popular folkloric treatment for dengue. It is also known as “gatas-gatas”, is a hairy herb grown in open grasslands, roadsides and pathways.
Tawa-tawa is good for those who have Dengue fever. If it does not totally cure the epidemic disease, at least it helps prevent or delay the effects of Dengue, that is, it lowers the platelet count of the patient’s blood.
IMPORTANCE OF STUDY
Dengue is no longer a seasonal disease and everyone by now must be aware of its signs and symptom. To increased the amount of blood platelet and prevent internal bleeding, even though tawa-tawa does not fight dengue virus.
Instead, it only promotes the development of blood platelets and softens the effect of the dengue virus. Tawa-tawa has natural enzymes within that stabilize the membranes of the blood vessels, preventing internal bleeding.
PURPOSE OF STUDY
This study aims to propose a new treatment to increase platelet count, which is normally achieved through platelet transfusion from blood donors. Instead, the study used the extract of Euphorbia hirta, commonly known as tawa-tawa. The plant is believed to possess a property that increases platelets. Tawa-tawa’s leaves to decoction, a method of extraction performed through boiling.
