Based on the personal experience of having a farm around my house in upstate New York it is clear that organic agriculture is sustainable if we use environmentally friendly resources to grow, maintain and harvest the agriculture. For the past couple of years my family has increased the harvest rate of fruits and vegetables by ten fold that we have produced around our home. We have avoided the hasty and poor science of GMO based foods because everything that comes out of our garden is organic and one hundred percent all natural.
Also, we never have to worry about damaging the environment by growing these fruits and vegetables as we are actually giving back.
By not using harmful pesticides which leak into neighboring water supplies and damage the surrounding ecosystem as well as avoiding the use of technology in the process of harvesting. My family does not own a tractor to make the harvesting process less complicated.
There is a small chance any of our crop would be damaged as we have a fence protecting the harvest from outlying animals and they are only sprayed with all natural homemade pesticides that prevent insects from attacking them.
Neighbors, friends and random people all are involved in the farming process. If it’s helping get rid of insects or protecting the harvest from animals someone will always have a solution for a problem at large.
Organic agriculture is socially sustainable when its procedures are entrenched in a social organization that broadens the core principles of ecological sustainability.
Farming at home creates a social aspect as other family members become interested, as well as friends are eager to learn these old respected methods once they see how someone else is successful. This style of farming contributes to rural economies with creating more jobs.
With the creation of huge farms there is a lot of workers needed to maintain the land and grow the crops. It also creates a whole entire economy that goes from the farmer to the transportation. From there to the vender and finally to the consumer. Also farmers enjoy to sell directly to consumers and they have a lot of them, whom they are great friends with. When someone decides that they want to farm for themselves at home they decrease the impact on the environment since its all a cycle of renewable energy. It aims to yield food while establishing an ecological balance to prevent soil fertility or pest problems.
Home-based farming takes a proactive approach as opposed to handling problems after they surface such as most agriculture in the country. Nutrient and energy cycling is amplified and the retentive abilities of the soil for nutrients and water are enhanced, compensating for the non-use of mineral fertilizers. The use of GMOs is not permitted throughout any stage of organic food fabrication, administering or usage. As the potential impact of GMOs to both the env not entirely understood, organic agriculture is taking the precautionary approach and choosing to encourage natural biodiversity within our environment.
The basic parts of life are satisfied with this lifestyle, food is easily available and healthy. In a world that is not as evolved as ours where food is easily accessible at any grocery store people would have to grow their own food and raise their own cattle.
Only in the past couple hundred years has food become easily obtainable. For it to be this easily obtainable it has to have been produced in massive quantity. Also organic farming encourages protection of the soil by using organic material and conservation of the habitat surrounding the farm. We need to become more sustainable as a community, food just keeps becoming modified and science changes what we eat and it isn’t natural. Eating all natural foods is much healthier and promotes a healthier lifestyle. There are couple advantages to GMO based foods, such as they change the genetics of certain crops so that if there is a drought or a storm they will survive.
Farmers have had issues where the whole entire crop dies in one day. Another advantage of GMO’s is there is bigger yield of crops for a smaller area of land, as well as foods have a longer shelve life for transportation, this is a essential sustainable way to feed the world. A utopian community functions perfectly because they produce their own agriculture products, but we do not live in a perfect world. The food on our shelves at home is comprised of GMO’s and processed foods. At the average supermarket people don’t always buy healthy fruits and vegetables. The American culture is a huge fan of foods high in saturated fats and carbs which have been proven to by the underlying causes for obesity, heart disease, and other nutritional disorders.
