Steven Spielberg was born on December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His family was very nomadic, moving several times during his life. Despite his itinerant actions, one thing remained constant in his life – his passion for film. He started out as an amateur filmmaker during his youth; then, he attended California State University, studying film. At California State University, he won “notice for his 1969 short feature ‘Amblin’” (“STEVEN SPIELBERG”). After abandoning his educational career, he began directing for television, becoming one of the youngest television directors.

During his run for television, he directed the pilot for Night Gallery and helped with episodes of Columbo and Marcus Welby, M.D. Also, during this time, he directed Duel in 1971; this film was praised as “one of the best movies ever made for television” and scored Spielberg the “opportunity to direct for the cinema” (“STEVEN SPIELBERG,” Biography).

Within 5 years, he had created another 2 movies that permanently cemented his credibility as a feature film director – 1974’s The Sugarland Express and 1975’s Jaws.

Spielberg’s next endeavor, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, proved to be another uncalculated success, exploring the “childlike wonder…of this world and beyond” (Biography). In 1979, his train of triumphs hit a bump with his film 1941; however, Spielberg didn’t let this stumble hinder his progress for long. He rebounded at the box office with Raiders of the Lost Ark, which became one of the biggest hits of the decade, eventually leading to 2 sequels and a television series (“STEVEN SPIELBERG”).

Continuing his achievement with otherworldly elements, he, then, directed E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. After this, he undertook literary adaptations like The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun. Next, he returned to direct another Indiana Jones film in 1989 and a film called Hook in the same year. Throughout the 80s, he produced Poltergeist, Back to the Future, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? while supervising many television series and efforts. Within a couple of years, he released Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan.

In 1994, he aided in the formation of Dreamworks SKG, a new studio which was bought by Paramount Pictures 11 years later. Spielberg continued working, often alongside many influential people, and creating things like another Indiana Jones film, the animated film The Adventures of Tintin, and the war film War Horse. Within the last few years, he has debuted projects such as Lincoln, Falling Skies, and Smash, among others. More recently, he served as executive producer of Jurassic World in 2015, Bridge of Spies, also in 2015, and The BFG and The Post in the following 2 years. While these are only a few of his works, Spielberg has been involved with countless others.

Spielberg has received many awards, such as 3 Oscar wins, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama. In addition, California State University awarded Spielberg with an honorary degree in 1994. He has also been a substantial contributor to charitable efforts; for example, in February of 2018, he donated $500,000 to the March for Our Lives Protest. His other donations include the Make-A-Wish Foundation, BID 2 BEAT AIDS, and International Medical Corps (“Steven Spielberg”).

Outside of his career, Steven Spielberg has been married twice. He has a son from his first marriage to actress Amy Irving and he has 5 children and 2 stepchildren with his current wife, Kate Chapshaw. Spielberg currently resides in Los Angeles, California and is 71 years old. He continues to produce, direct, and write many films.
