Swimming pool is a type of basin artificially created for the swimming purpose or the bathing purpose. It facilitates people to cool off their body in a hot summer day. Hot water pools are also available in the market, which maintain the temperature of the pool.Pool word is basically derived from a Latin word “Piscina ”. The history of swimming pools is as old as 3rd millennium BC. In 3rd millennium BC a pool with a size of 12 x 7 was constructed in Mohenjo Daro which was name as “Great Bath”.

The emperors of the Mohenjo Daro , Romans, Greeks and Sri Lankans build beautiful swimming pools at the reign of their emperorship. Greeks used their swimming pools for the purpose of training also. They use to train their athletes and troops in them. The first heated swimming pool was created in Rome by Gaius Maecenas.

In 19th century the popularity of swimming pools rose to new heights when 6 pools were constructed in London, Britain.

These pools were for the use of common people. At first the pools were used for the bathing purposes but with the passage of time the bathers became swimmers and it became a sports. There are numerous types of pools depending upon their shapes and sizes. In 1950’s the trend of private pools started to gain popularity in America due to warm summer climate in some of the America’s regions. The size of private pools varies from 3.7x 7.3 m to 6.1 x 12 m. These pools are easy to assemble and disassemble or can be built permanently in the houses.

Public pools are mostly found in the recreational complexes, hotels and holiday resorts. If they are constructed in a separate building then the building is called “natatorium”. Their size usually starts from 80 ft. These pools are mostly built to facilitate their customers. The swimming pools which are used in Olympics are called Competition Pools. The standards of Competition Pools are clearly defined by the International Swimming Federation. According to them the swimming pool must be 25- 50 m long and 4.4 ft deep. These pools are constructed indoors and must have proper heating system to enable their use all year round. The standards are different for different types of competition.

To ensure that the water is hygiene a proper dress code and plumbing system is required. The dress code for swimming in most of the countries is swimsuits, designed separately for men and women. However the restrictions of dress codes for swimming are different in different countries, like they are strict in European and Scandinavian countries and soft in other countries. The key to ensure clean water in swimming pool is the continual cycle of water. The water should be rotated in such a way that the water from the pool reaches the filter and chemical treatment plant and then again enters the pool. In such way the water is kept free from the dirt and the chances of bacteria in the water is reduced to minimum. This water rotation system ensures the health safety of the swimmers.
