A few years ago Hayao Miyazaki, a great Japanese animation director, created an anime movie called Spirited Away. This spectacular animation is no exception to Hayao Miyazaki’s directing as it contains thoughtful messages, imagination, and a happy ending. Spirited Away’s evaluation meets all the requirements of a great animation movie. This classic fairytale ending of happiness takes viewers on a beautiful journey of nature’s existence with a smile. Spirited Away is about Chihiro, a ten year-old girl, who takes an amazing journey to the land of spirits.

It begins when Chihiro and her parents are driving, because they have decided to move to a new home in a strange town. During this journey Chihiro’s father decides to try to take a shortcut and ends up at the entrance to a long tunnel. Chihiro begs not to to proceed, but her parents insist that they take a look. To their surprise at the end of the tunnel is a a theme park filled with food.

Chihiro is very weary not to eat the food, while her parents are eating immense amounts of it. When dusk comes, Chihiro is terrified when she starts seeing spirits roaming around.

Being terrified, she runs to find her parents, and finds out they were turned into pigs. Haku, a mysterious boy, helps hide her from this unfamiliar and dangerous spirit world. Haku disguises Chihiro and plants her in a magical bath house that is used to replenish spirits. In order to stay there and figure out a way to save her parents she must find a job there. After working very hard there and working with the spirits, she finally saves her parents. A great film always has criteria that must be met during evaluation. First the audience must stay interested. A movie must take the audience to a place beyond their own lives, taking them to a world beyond the limits of their imagination. A great trait would be the movies ability to make people remember it long after they see it. Movies must make the audience think in order for them to remember it.

A movie is mainly for entertainment so it is required that it entertains the viewers. A great movie should fill the audiences mind with happiness and joy rather then sadness. This is the reason a happy ending is mandatory There is much imagination in Spirited Away. If audiences are fans of great fairytales, Spirited Away is a great movie to watch. It contains the nostalgia of many other fairytales for example Chihiro ‘s parents commit wrongdoing which inturn turns them into animals. Yet, the twist on how this animation makes you remember it is that instead of the child being punish it is the parents. The savior is also a girl unlike other fairytales. Mizayzaki’s fantastic imagination is to blame for the animations ability to be truly unique. Mizayzaki always try to bring a child’s imagination to life.

You see in Spirited Away something you might have seen in a childhood dream. For instance the entire staff of this magical bathhouse, magical nature spirits, are working for a big headed and bodied witch. These things are all in the dreams and memories of young children, and Miyazaki always brings these characters to screen. There are many very important messages in Spirited Away that fill the audience with joy that makes them remember it. Chihiro’s encounter with the river spirit in the bathhouse starts to show a deep message. Chihiro becomes the river spirit attendant who is only known as the stink spirit. She spots what she believes to be a thorn of stink spirit while cleaning him. While pulling she then realizes the thorn was a handle of a bicycle, and much other garbage was coming out of him.

Through hard effort Chihiro gets the stink spirit cleaned to find out he is the river spirit. This message tries to convey an emotional message that will make the audience reflect and remember this film on how they affect nature. Spirited Away happy ending is where it truly meets it criteria. There is a spirit called “No Face”, he is very lonely. He is all alone, but after a while he joyfully finds a friend thanks to Chihiro. This lonely spirit has a very happy ending. After much hard work Chihiro saves her parents from Yubaba the evil witch. Yet, Yubaba also has a happy ending of finding herself and changing her ways.

Unique to Spirited Away is that a happy ending is able to be found for all characters whether you are the antagonist or protagonist. This truly makes for a joyful and rememorable happy ending that everyone wants. Spirited Away has all the qualities of a great animated movie. Director Hayao Miyazaki has once again created an amazing animation through bringing key qualities of joy, memorability, and a world beyond limits of the imagination to this animation. Spirited Away contains a beautiful journey, imagination, thoughtful message and finally, the viewers will feel relieved after watching Spirited Away because of its beautiful ending.
