Okay, so you are sitting down to write your next song. You start playing some chords, humming a melody, and singing made up words. You are searching hard to find lyrics. You keep playing, humming, and looking around the room in hopes a killer songwriting idea will appear out of the blue. Thirty minutes go by and you haven’t gotten anywhere.

You then give up and say you’ll try again later that day or maybe the next day. A week later you realize you haven’t even picked up your guitar or touched your piano at all. You are afraid. Afraid that you won’t have any new ideas for the lyrics. Afraid of failure. Don’t let this bring you down. It is simply a challenge…not the end of your songwriting career.

So where can I get songwriting ideas from? Where is the list of killer songwriting ideas?

There is no master list of great song/lyric ideas. Sorry. That would take the art and fun out of songwriting. I read The Songwriter’s Idea Book a while back. It is a great book that takes you step by step through the creative writing process and also offers over 40 strategies for designing distinctive songs.

Songwriting ideas come from all around you. If you are feeling stuck try going to the nearest bookstore. Walk up and down the aisles checking out the song titles. Take a notebook with you and write down any and all titles that speak to you. These titles could be used for the hook of your next song or the title of your next song or act as a good starting point to get you our of your funk.

Songwriting ideas strike at the most random times. Always, always, always carry a small pocket notebook with you everywhere you go. This way you can write the ideas down as soon as they come to you. Once you have a good title or hook sit down and write down every single word that you think relates to the intital word or phrase. This will give you a huge word bank to use when you begin to craft the song.
