State of the Nation Address

Categories: NationPolicyState

The fourth annual State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Simeon “PNoy” Aquino III was delivered last Monday, July 22, 2013 in Batasang Pambansa Complex, Quezon City with its very famous theme “Sa Gitna ng Daang Matuwid. ” It started at exactly 4:03pm and ended 5:46pm. It takes almost one and a half hour to bring to the public the longest SONA he had ever made gathering a total of 88 applauses from government officials and important personalities in the country.

PNoy’s speech was very comprehensive since it almost tackled all important issues in our country and he made it more specific by using numbers and certain rates to prove the progressing economy.

He also confidently mentioned his administration’s great achievements and accomplishments on different aspects of our society particularly the political and economic aspects. Included in his successful administration were the program Pantawid ng Pamilyang Pilipino Program commonly known as the 4Ps, producing more TESDA scholars, housing programs for informal settlers (main cause of flooding).

The President also mentioned the domination of his senatorial candidates in May 2013 elections proving that he has regained the trust of the Filipino people in the presidency. He also made thankful remarks for the police officers with their great acts and also other department secretaries and extended his praises to the exemplary public servants. He ended his speech by saying he was proud to be a Filipino and it is wonderful to be a Filipino in these times.

In my own view towards the delivery of his speech, I was a little bit dismay since we have heard in his own mouth strongly –worded criticisms that hit other government officials and agencies like the Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Immigration and National Irrigation Administration which should not be because he was a respected individual in our society.

He showed to the people how fearless he was to leave harsh words in front of the public without any basis.

There’s only one reason behind it, that is, to uplift him to the public and to cover his own anomalies by mentioning allegations to some other officials. Of course, it is very obvious that many government officials are accused of being corrupt officials which is true that’s why there’s no sense of saying it to the public. That act was just worsening the image of our country and that cannot be a resolution to the deteriorating problems like poverty, corruption and anomalies. Instead of criticizing government officials, the President must focus on how to improve more our country and make himself an effective leader to us Filipinos.

He must first make the first move to unite with other government officials in order for them to establish a better administration. The government is more likely to implement more programs if the officials and the people actively cooperate with each other. A house cannot stand with just a piece of wood alone, just like a state, it cannot be reform by the President all by himself, he needs the citizens in order to form good governance and to promulgate laws to achieve economic and political change.

In response to the allotment of more funds in the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, I’m not very much in favor because it was not fair to raise budget. Many citizens who belong to the average class persons will not be spared with its benefits. The program may include also those undeserving citizens who will continuously be just depending on the mercy of the government and will never look for a job at all. However, the SONA informed us of the different happenings in the government and the status of our country itself. And as citizens, we have the right to know each and every detail of it.
