Social Problem in "One Percent"

Identify the social problem: There is an ever-increasing wealth gap seen amongst the super rich and the average citizen in the United States of America. Essentially, the “rich” are becoming richer while the “poor” are becoming poorer. Identify the thesis of the film: The thesis of this film is that there is a tiny percentage of Americans that possess almost half the wealth of the U.S. today. With such a large accumulation of wealth in the hands of so few people, there is bound to be some sort of threat against our way of living, especially against our nation’s economy.

The filmmaker also wants the general population of the U.S. to be informed on what truly goes on “behind the curtains” in the lives of the insanely powerful and wealthy. Johnson captures this rare footage to not only appeal to the curiosity of citizens and entertain their wild thoughts surrounding the “Illuminati”, but more importantly, he does so to bring forth more awareness to the effects of this remarkable wealth gap in present day.

Identify the significance and purpose of the film: The significance and purpose of this film is that the “one percent” possess such an abundance of wealth and power that they have the capability to influence our elected officials to pass laws, rules, etc. that favor them and/or their agenda(s).

In other words, at present, the playing field is not equal one bit; in fact, it is quite corrupt. However, with this meaningful knowledge, we can work towards a more equal economy where money is more spread out amongst the population.

Outline and analyze the content of the film: It shows how the other half-lives, with real-world examples of the wealth gap in America: it takes a visit from a rundown housing projects in Chicago, walks around with a cab driver, and sees the human toll of the economy of unfair Florida sugar industry. Taken from 9:19 of the film – An analysis taken from Lido Wealth Advisors’ Greg Kushner’s statement is that he is somewhat true but what he is truly saying is that the masses have neither the financial acuity nor the intellect to properly handle substantial amounts of money like the ones who were birthed into vast wealth.

The ‘system’ is rigged or set-up to benefit those who already possess and control a vast amount of power and wealth in our society and anyone who doesn’t get that is walking around in a perpetual fog. Make course connections: In this film, they portray the relationship shared between the bourgeoisie and proletariat, portraying each great class’ way of living. This films illustrates the famous quote, ‘The rich get richer and the poor get poorer’, an aphorism by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It is truthful that the rich is rich due to the labor provided by the poor and that they need the poor to stay poor for them to remain rich. This is why they prefer production to the reside in foreign countries. This is how they are able to get the lowest minimum wages to pay their loyal workers.
