When I think about my own biases, perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs I use to holds about different culturally ethics groups, I definitely have to rethink and correct myself and not stereotype individuals on my thoughts anymore. I always knew mankind was magnificent because we were created and GOD eyes but this course just emphasized just how important human development is. Personality trait, something we inherited from our family members, I know longer get offended when I am told you acts like your grandmamma because I know now that a compliment. In the Western culture the elderly are thoughts to have a special inner strength and they are assumed to be a valuable resource for younger individuals in a family. In many African cultures, reaching an old age is seen as a sign of divine intervention, and the elderly are often call big person’ in our case big momma.

Have you ever paid close attention to individuals who are stuck and traffic jam, you might notice some are clam and tolerant whereas others become very inpatient and angry. Wisdom is a timeless quality, is not the same as intelligence, but intelligent is derived from knowledge of the here and now. Personality is the pattern of psychological and behavioral characteristics by which each person can be compare and contrast with other. Personality is a reflection of a person demeanor about his or her self. This is what personality means the unique pattern of psychological and behavioral characteristic by which each person can be compare and contrast with other people. The four main theoretical approaches to personality are psychodynamic, trait, social-cognitive and humanistic.

The psychodynamic approach was first proposed by Sigmund Freud. Freud assumes that personality arise out of the interplay of various unconscious psychological process. Freud theory that personality had three components the id, ego, and the superego, each has its own function. Id operates according to pleasure and principal, ego to reality and superego society’s rules and values. The trait approach to personality assumes that personality is made up of stable internal characteristics that appear at varying strengths in different people and guide his or her feeling, thought, and behavior. Dispositional traits are those broad non conditional dimensions of human individuality that goes by names as dominance, friendless and dutifulness the big-five model The manner in which personality trait are conceived range from completely non theoretical to strongly theoretical. Non theoretical is based on the lexical assumption, the frequency of words in language reflective the important of word when describing individuals.

It conceives that personality traits are simply descriptive adjective that people commonly used to refer to one another. Gordon Allport trait theory believed that personality is created by a small set of central traits and a larger number of secondary traits in each individual. Allport theory analyzed language to identify traits laying the foundation for modern research. His traditional approach to personality psychology holds that personality traits are internal forces within people that direct his or her behavior and choices (Allport, G. W. 1937). Building on the work of Allport and Raymond Cattell cotemporary researchers have used factor analysis to identify the five basic dimensions of personality. A working vacation in San Juan, Puerto Rico this last week was something of a dream for me so when the opportunity to visit and not be out of any pocket expense came my way I was ecstatic. My perception of all the men was being strong and muscular because of my sixth grade teacher.

He would often talk about the island and I would often daydream and imagine how fun it would be to live on the islands. On November 8, 2013 to November 14, 2013 I was in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Remember this was a working vacation so I had to work, while down there a tragedy happen to a co-worker of mine two sisters lost their son and daughter and a head on collision car accident in Jacksonville, Arkansas because the driver was texting. It just so happens that number twelve week assignments was on death and dying and I could not bring myself to write anything else about dying that week. All the shopping and pinna cola we were going to drink that week was not happening, a black cloud had come over our trip. I was approach by my president to assist my co-workers and their grieving process because one we were all out of town, and two I had informed them that week that my assignments was on death and dying.

I am going to apologize in advance because I know this paper will be longer than what you want but I feel the need to reflect what this class has taught me. I have always admired the person centered approach originated in the 1940’s by Carl Roger. Characterized by genuineness, non-judgmental caring and empathy person-centered counseling is an approach to helping individuals and groups based on the philosophy that self-directed growth process follows the provision and reception of a special kind of relationship (Raskin & Rogers, 1995. 1995, 128). Professional who use this approach strive to create a therapeutic environment for the client’s that conformable. Trust is the fundamental and pervasive concept and the foundation of the actualizing tendency that perceived to be present in every living organism.

The therapist allows the clients to lead the discussion and not steer the clients in a particular direction impelling each individuals to move toward the realization of his or her full potential. Unconditional positive regard emphasizes that therapist show complete acceptance and support for his or her client’s. The person-centered approach has several unique concepts that exemplify the conceptual core of the human approach. One is humans are full of potentials, forward moving, accepting, realistic, cooperative, rational, independent, trustworthy, positive, and constructive (Rogers, 1959, pp. 194-212). From a counselor’s perspective he or she would strive to approach to the client’s world without preconceived notions. The person centered counselor would emphasize the importance of the relationship of trust and acceptance between the client’s and counselors. The counselors will exhibit willingness for the client to experience inner freedom and congruence. No standards on the clients or impose no external values but in his or her relationship with the client the counselor would be genuine, listening, and responding with empathy.

Through nonverbal behavior the counselor acceptance and prizing of the clients as people respects, understanding, communicate through his or her words a positive new client-counselor relationship is form (Kirschenbaum & Henderson, 1989, pp. 239-240). Roger in 1969 states “When I can accept the fact that I have deficiencies, many faults, make lots of mistakes, and am often ignorant when I should be knowledgeable. Often prejudiced when I should be open-minded, often have feeling which are not justified by the circumstances, and then I can be much more real” (p.228). Warmth and compassion when the client’s is in danger, mired down when the client’s is bore. When the client’s is attack by overpowering forces the counselor express anger and if the client’s act destructively toward the counselor or anyone fear is express. Genuine hallmark emotions of a counselor who has opened him-or herself to emotional experience of the client-counselor relationship is aware of the client’s feeling and gives voice whether negative or positive this will help the relationship moved forward (Roger, 1977, pp. 9-10).

Unconditional positive regard tempered with genuineness should and need to be frequent reasonably in therapy. The counselors need to be willing to accept at any given time the multiplicity of feeling the client’s has and be willing to accept the confusion, resentment, anger, fear, and sorrow Instead use words of encourage but word as acceptance, caring, and prizing. These are synonymous with positive attribute toward the clients. Walking in the client’s, shoes seeing through the client’s eyes the counselor’s experience both the agony and ecstasy. This is another important part for promoting psychological growth empathic understanding. At the deepest level of the client inner feeling the counselor realized his or her ability to sensitively and accurately enter into the client private world, empathy. Mirror his or her feeling the client covey this to the counselor’s and the counselor’s begins to comprehend, and encounter ever moment by moment by the client’s (Rogers, 1977, pp. 10-11).

Without judgmental or sympathetic moving delicately within the client’s realm of experience the counselor must walk an emotional tightrope. The person centered definite has merits for helping individuals and I understand during the 911 attack this centered was used. For me I was so emotionally drain I found myself crying and sometimes just speechless and then I remember reading a blog I had read from one of my classmate had post from the words of the late Dr. Sir Thomas Browne and I quote “we have forgotten how to die and have even forgotten that death is itself is a gift. There is much lost wisdom in the words of the 17th century doctor Sir Thomas Browne [1]. In Religio Medici, he found comfort in the thought that though it be in the power of the weakest arm to take away life; it is not in the strongest to deprive us of death. His clear contention was that we are happier with death than we should have been without it”.

These words held me together and I realize I was human and I was not superwoman and if I want to last and this field I must avoid what is called burnout. I made myself so available to everyone till I became physical and emotional overwhelm I began to feel adrift and uncertain about myself. I was wondering if I was giving good advice, as of November 22, 2013, 4:37a.m. I know longer feel this way. I was told because of my genuineness and under no pretense attitude and being transparent with my feeling, which Roger believed to be a key component, that the counselor cannot hide behind their title or make false front. What the client’s sees is what he or she gets no hidden agenda. No innuendos, no defense to hide behind counselor inadequacies, no retreating into psychological jargon.

The counselors present him or she with the flow and flux of feeling, through thought this behavior becomes a relationships meaning congruent. As I look back over the semester and this class and I reflect over the thing I have learned I realized I have learned. I can look at toddler picking something up with his hands and know he or she is doing a technique what is called a pincher. My favorite is I no longer allowed my daughter to tell my grandson to hush because I know this is called babbling something toddler do and it a developmental stage.

I want to make sure that I utilized all the tool I have acquired in this class in my personal and professional life blending together with my future clients their gut feeling and head I the counselor can clearly cognizant awareness in presentation to the client is an expression of I am total investment in their therapeutic moment. My role is to provide dedicated support for my client utilizing my education and the success of the individual’s will be highly impacted by their abilities to establish strong working relationships with the me therefore is essential for the development effective partnership with the counselor.
