Self-managed learning Essay
Self Managed Learning is a process which persons take the initiative, with our without the help of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identify individual and material resources for learning, choosing and implement proper learning strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes (Knowles, 1975, p. 18) . It also means managed themselves to improve their skills. Self-managed learning does not mean the learner learns alone or in isolation. That’s why self-managed learning is important for everyone to improve their abilities.
Self managing learners use a range to ensemble themselves. The problem is that formless, unexpected learning is very inefficient. There are many approaches for self-managed learning. Among them I will use learning through research, learning from other and secondments. I use them to improve the skills of employees in HR department. Learning through research Learning through research is an important element of modern independent learning. Nowadays, using internet is widely spread and becoming the essential element for learning.
Internet can provide up-to-the-minute data from a range of sources. There are so many web sites that we can use for learning. As a director of HR department, I will provide internet service for our bookstore. So, the employees can search the information that they want to know about market condition and other general knowledge. They can communicate with customers and even create more customers. But staff should not use personal websites (for example Facebook, Twitter and Skype) in job time. They don’t have to go to library for reading books if they need to read.
I will let them read all kinds of books from our stores to make them get general knowledge. Learning from other There are two methods in learning from other. They are coaching and mentoring. Both focus on the individual, can improve confidence, motivation and productivity and decrease staff turnover as individuals feel valued (Eric Parsloe, 1999). I will use both methods for my HR department. Coaching Coaching is a process of improving the person’s skills. It is very useful to broaden the employee’s knowledge very quickly( BPP Learning Media, 2010) .
I will coach my employees to manage their work very well and do their work effectively. Our staffs can also get general knowledge that help in their carriers. They will also get confidence in doing their jobs. Mentoring Mentoring is the process where one person offer help, guidance, advice and support to make easy the learning or development of other (BPP Learning Media, 2010). I will let them to make mistakes under my control. I will lead the employee through solving a problem, or evaluate their work. I will I will let my staffs to solve the real problems and create real decision.
But the disadvantage of mentoring is staffs may overdependence on the mentor. That’s why I will use coaching and mentoring to improve and develop the abilities of our staffs in HR department. Secondments A secondment is where an worker in the short term changes job roles within the same company or transfers to another organization for an arranged period of time. This can be within the private or public sector, or to a non-profit making organization ( Yaechan Ra, December 2012). The benefits of secondments include the employee, the employer and the organization ( BPP Learning Media, 2010).
I will let my staffs to work together in my bookstore. Staffs can find excellent way to search different career possibilities without them leaving their current job. Each employee will become a multi-skill workers and they can do many works. Staffs can also expand transferable skills and knowledge that can place into practice once they return to their original position. Our department can also have high potential managers by using these learning styles. Therefore, I think this is a good approach for our staff to help their skills at job.
Lifelong learning Lifelong learning is the continuous learning of skills and knowledge throughout the life of an individual. School system that runs from primary school through the university and organized school-like programs produced in business for technical and professional training is formal learning. Informal learning includes individuals attain attitudes, values, skills and knowledge from daily experience ,from family and neighbors, from work and play, from the market place, the library and the mass media.
It is the methods to encourage the continuous development and improvement of the knowledge and skills needed for employment and personal performance (BPP learning Media, 2010). I will use continuing professional development (CPD), workshop and further education. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a part of the lifelong learning process. It is the general and continuous updating, maintenance and enhancement of the professional and personal skills. Personal Development plans will identify training gaps and needs but other unexpected opportunities may come up which will also add towards CPD (BPP Learning Media 2010).
I will use further education. I will give them the latest training techniques and best practices. I will let them learn that are necessary for them. If our staffs are not good at English, I will send them to English classes. If they are not good at computing, I will let them attend computer training course. I will also make them learn accounting class. If our staffs know about accounting, they will also able to work in cashier. So that our staffs will get more skills and it will be helpful to their life.
Not only they can use in their current jobs but also this skills will be together with them throughout their carrier. It also offers to increase their income. They can also get salaries and staffs become more familiar during training. Moreover, job security, labour market opportunities and employability may also increase for them too. As for the manager, I will cost for training them and staffs may not work well in their jobs during training. So, I think this is the best strategies for the lifelong learning for employee.
