"Secrets" - book by Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond is an eminent contemporary Indian writer of British descent. He prolifically authored inspiring children’s books and was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award to honor his work of literature. Born on May 19, 1934, in Kasauli, India. At the age of 17 in London, he began to write his first novel, The Room on the Roof. Some of other notable works of Ruskin Bond include Blue Umbrella, Susanna’s Seven Husbands, A Flight of Pigeons and Funny Side Up.

“SECRETS” is a book written by Ruskin Bond.

The book is a collection of fantastic short stories which richly evokes Dehradun of the 1940s.These are interconnected tales narrated by Bond, tells mostly about his teenage years in Dehra. The book is about how he spends his years in his winter holidays after coming from his hostel which is in Shimla. The first story ‘The Canal’ is about how he sent his childhood with his friends, like everyone in a mischievous manner. Every hot summer afternoons they would enjoy near a canal, eating at chaat-shops or riding bicycles into tea gardens.

The second story ‘Over the Wall’ is about how the narrator looks over the garden wall and passes his time in his granny’s bungalow. He then notices a small cottage and is curious to know who lives there, and then he gets to know that a man who has leprosy lives there and the story continues about his life with unexpected twist.

The third story ‘Gracie’ is about a young girl who sings at the Casino. She after a few years marries Corporal and shifts to England where the Corporal ditched her and she started the work of prostitution. The fourth story ‘At Green’s Hotel’ is about a young gentlemen Captain Ramesh who sends a lot of memorable time with our narrator and later an unexpected twists comes wherein they get to know that he is a strangler from Delhi and the narrator is shocked to know that as he was a good and generous friend of the narrator. The fifth story ‘The Skeleton in the Cupboard’ is a mysterious story, when the narrator is in his hostel he gets to know that at his mom’s hotel Green’s they found a skeleton in the cupboard while cleaning the cupboard. The narrator is curious to find whose skeleton it is and after asking people his mother comes to know that the skeleton is of Mrs. Green who was the wife of the founder of the hotel. Then when the narrator is back for his holidays his mother and he come to know that Mrs. Green is alive and they also get to know that the skeleton was bought there for the purpose opening a medical college. The sixth story ‘The Late Night Show’ is about how much the narrator loved to see movies especially English and American and he preferred going in the night show as the usher-cum-ticket-collector had become a friend of the narrator and would allow him for free. One day a murder happened in the theater where the narrator was present and he could recognize the murderer and hence the murderer was behind the narrator to kill him and the story ends with an unexpected twist. The seventh story ‘A Tiger in the Lounge’ is about a colonel who kills a tiger which enters the lounge of the Hotel Green’s. It also tells us that the tiger grabs hold of a person and he had got wounds on his body due to the tiger and the man later died due to rabies.

Ruskin Bond displays great qualities of storytelling in this fascinating book “Secrets”. It is worth reading this book with such exciting and amazing collection of stories. He has different genre in each story- one is a nostalgic story of his childhood, one being a thriller, one being a mystery and so on. He also is good at writing detective type of stories. He has so many experiences to share which are worth knowing. Most of the stories in this book has unexpected and unpredictable ends which makes the stories more interesting. Few stories can be relatable like how we get curious about anything and everything; we want to go deep inside the matter. He has stream of memories flowing some with his friend, some with his family and some with other people. The narrator skills of writing and telling us the story has a great impact on us and we just cannot keep the book until we finish. The narrator’s way of writing is mind-blowing. The narrator makes us feel the situation which gives greater impact to the reader. The language used by the narrator is also simple and easy to understand. In simple words many strong emotions are blended together in an incredible way. The book is a must read form the many collections of Ruskin Bond.

I would recommend this book to people of my age as it is a fantastic blend of stories of different genres. Teenagers can get to know about childhood and teenage of the narrator. There is a lot of suspense in most of the stories and a great book.
