Physical therapy is one of the integral parts of health and medical care programs in Malaysia. It plays important role in the maintenance of the health of the individual and the community in this country. The physical therapist used their professional activities to contribute to the prevention and correction of people’s disabilities or potentially handicapping conditions. Physical therapists provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities in patients with injury or disease.

They restore, maintain, and promote overall fitness and health. Physical therapists are the leaders in the rehabilitation that allows individuals with chronic conditions to returning to productive lives.

For public health settings, the physical therapists will perform duties including planning, organizing, evaluating, interpreting, coordinating, and supervising physical therapy, participating in the development and conduct the community’s health studies, teaching exercise for individuals and groups, and rendering direct care to patients. The activities of a physical therapist will do such as direct services to the patients.

They will perform physical therapy procedures, evaluations, and diagnostic tests on patients. A physical therapist will be teaching appropriate treatment procedures and supportive activities to the patients and family members including developing needed plans for modifying equipment, appliances, and the physical surrounding in the patient’s home. Besides, physical therapy also needs to demonstrate the appropriate procedure and use of adaptive equipment to nurses and other personnel for follow-up services to the patient and family
Physical therapy practice is known as highly involved in caring for individuals with disabilities. Their goals are to transform society by optimizing movement in order to improve the human experience. Physical therapists are now expected to do much more than just provide treatment to patients with issues limiting mobility. Physical therapists are expected to be fundamental health care team members who tackle prevention initiatives, such as decreasing falls for the elderly and the prevention of athletic injuries. Additionally, they are tasked with preventing movement and flexibility issues that can be brought on by chronic diseases or other debilitating health conditions.

Physical therapy always is known to reduce and eliminate pain. They will give therapeutic exercises and manual therapy techniques such as joint and soft tissue mobilization or treatments such as ultrasound, taping or electrical stimulation can help relieve pain and restore muscle and joint function to reduce pain. These therapies can also prevent pain from happening again in future. Next, physical therapy will also help the patient to be healthy without having surgery. And even if surgery is needed, the patient may benefit from pre-surgery physical therapy. If patients are going into a surgery stronger and in better shape, they will recover faster afterward in many cases. Also, by avoiding surgery, health care costs are reduced.

Other than that, physical therapy helps people to improve mobility. If a patient having trouble standing, walking, or moving, no matter the age is, physical therapy can help them. Stretching and strengthening exercises help restore the patient’s ability to move. Physical therapists can properly fit individuals with a cane, crutches, or any other assistive device, or assess for orthotic prescription. By customizing an individual care plan, whatever activity that is important to an individual’s life can be practiced and adapted to ensure maximal performance and safety. People who recover from a stroke really need physical therapy for them to be functional again. It is common to lose some degree of function and movement after stroke. Physical therapy helps strengthen weakened parts of the body and improve gait and balance. They can also improve stroke patients’ ability to transfer and move around in bed so that they can be more independent around their home, and reduce their burden of care for toileting, bathing, dressing, and other activities of daily living.

Besides, physical therapy helps people to recover from or prevent a sports injury. They understand how different sports can increase the risk for specific types of injuries such as stress fractures for distance runners. They can design appropriate recovery or prevention exercise programs for athletes to ensure a safe return to their sport. Physical therapy also can manage heart and lung disease. While patients may complete cardiac rehabilitation after a heart attack or procedure, they also may receive physical therapy if their daily functioning is affected. For pulmonary problems, physical therapy can improve quality of life through strengthening, conditioning, and breathing exercises, and help patient clear fluid in the lungs.
