Richard's Letter

History Journal

Through his letter, Richard advice the queen that through placing a substantial investment towards occupation of America, they would be able to get all the goods required in Europe thereby halting the trade between Europe and Spain. Richard believes that coastal ports owned by the King of Spain are of less economic value compared to the gains England would achieve if it utilized the land and the trees in America to make ships as well as strengthen its navy.

Through the missionary work, they would be able to convince Americans to conform to the religious beliefs of England. Those who opposed this arrangement, as well as changes, were viewed as barbarians as they discerned the new lifestyle brought to them. They were viewed as ignorant as well as strangers, and according to (The Fundamental Constitution), they were not to be expelled from the community nor be punished because of holding divergent beliefs. Richard encourages English men especially the poor as well as those who have lost hope in England to seek employment opportunities in America.

The aim of England occupying America was to establish a sense of stability within the family setup. The slaves were therefore forced to work extra hard in order to be free and establish their own families (Sending Women to Virginia 1622). However, the population that migrated to America became sick, and some even died. This dampened the hopes of increasing the population of Jamestown. Part of the population did not make it to America as they died along the way.

Roger Williams who established the freedom of worship stated that no one was to be forced to attend prayers be they be Muslims, Jews as well as Protestants. This formed the basis as to why Americas colonies had varied views regarding religion. The English men encouraged this form of dynamism as the different ideas the colonies forfeits belonged to the same religion. It, therefore, meant that no one would punish an individual because of the religious views. A colony like Massachusetts was predominantly occupied by Protestants from England and individuals in this colony were governed by a combination of God's laws and the laws of the land. This is in complete contrast with what takes place in Maryland. According to (Ninety-Nine, Constitution of Carolinas), it was expected that each individual in the colony attends church services. In case one fails to go to church, he would be regarded as a reject in the community. This is a clear indication that the government had no intention of interfering with the religious beliefs of various colonies.
