Revengeand and Honor in "Hamlet"

In the case of Hamlet honor and revenge come together as one, while Hamlet seeks vengeance for his father’s death. Both Hamlet and Laertes are driven by a desire for vengeance. Hamlet and Laertes each show how their desire for revenge leads to tragedy. The loss of their loved ones caused these characters in Hamlet to take action. Three sons in Hamlet must avenge their father’s death. Hamlet's father was killed by his uncle, and Laertes' father was killed by Hamlet, and Fortinbras' father was killed by Hamlet's father.

They all must show honor in avenging their father's deaths and get revenge and murder the person who killed their father. Hamlet shows three different cases of honor and revenge with the characters Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras.

Although Hamlet is told who murdered his father he does react fast on killing his uncle he waits to find proof and lets his uncle tell on himself Hamlet shows honor in trying to find out he did it and not just killing him right away. His love for Ophelia showed honor he didn’t want her caught up all in his mess so he tries to get her to stay away from him because of what he has to do. If Hamlet kills his uncle he will be killing the king which defines the honor code of his time.

even after his mother ends up marrying his uncle he is mad and now that he finds out he murdered his father makes him seek vengeance much more. his hunger for vengeance made more problems for him he ends up killing Ophelia's dad.

Laertes believes if he does not murder his father's killer he will dishonor him and his family Claudius took the opportunity to use his manipulative skills and convince Laertes he should kill Hamlet. Laertes wants to look good in the eyes of the people around him. Unlike Hamlet Laertes reacts right away with his revenge He storms home from France as soon as he hears the news, raises a crowd of followers, and invades the palace, saying "That drop of blood that's calm proclaims me a bastard." in other words, not being upset by his father's death would prove that his mother was stepping out on his dad. Lay her i' th' earth, And from her fair and unpolluted flesh May violets spring! I tell thee, churlish priest, A ministering angel shall my sister be When thou liest howling. (5.1.244-252). His sister gets a hushed-up, not-very-nice burial because she commits suicide, and suicides weren't supposed to be given a Christian burial at all. Laertes tries to demand more ceremony for his sister. When Hamlet shows up, the two of them jump in Ophelia's grave and fight about who loved her more. Fortinbras only cares about the honor of himself and his family.
