Reconstructive breast plant surgery can help breast cancer patients regain confidence in themselves. A Pacemaker can help someone’s blood pump better so they can play with their children more. Doctors may have come up with an implantable device to lessen the symptoms of Parkinsons’s Disease. Surgeons are finding new and amazing techniques to help finally be able to cure diseases or disabilities. Medical implants can be used in almost every area of the human body.

Each year millions of patients improve their quality of life through surgical procedures. A reason why people need these types of medical implants is that they help heal different types of pain the human body can have. Medical Devices improve the quality of life for most people, but they may come with short and long-term risks.

Implants are a medical device inserted in the human body. The implant usually stays there for 30 days or longer. The implant is a medical device designed to replace, restore or enhance (“Center for Devices and Radiological Health”).

The difference between a medical implant and a transplant is that an implant is made by people, and a transplant is from another person’s body. There are more than a few different types of implants that can be available to people around the globe. The type of implant a person receives depends on the area of the human body in which it needs to be implanted. Specific areas include dental, cardiovascular, orthopedic, neural, or implants based on cosmetic surgery.

One type of implant used in the stomach to repair a hernia is surgical mesh. “Hernias have a high rate of recurrence, and surgeons often use surgical mesh to strengthen the hernia repair and reduce the rate of recurrence”(“Center for Devices and Radiological Health”). Surgical mesh is a screen-like substance that helps provide support for damaged or weak tissue. There have been cases of surgical mesh used in hernia repair that adheres to the intestines. The mesh then causes injury to surrounding organs, although most of these incidents are because of recalled goods. “An incisional hernia is a hernia that forms at the scar site of abdominal surgery. Post-surgery, the abdominal wall fails to heal and leaves a gap in the wall. This gap allows for parts of the intestinal tract or other digestive organs to push through into subcutaneous layers of the abdomen”(Writer 2019). It is possible to find surgical mesh made of synthetic materials. The synthetic materials used can be absorbable, non-absorbable, or a mixture of substances.

Implantable devices for the cardiovascular system helps control the rhythm of the heart. A few examples include an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and a pacemaker. The ICD is used in patients at risk for heart failure and can restore the heart to a normal rhythm. ICD also helps prevent sudden cardiac death. A common problem with the ICD is that it may cause arrhythmia, which makes the heart not pump blood very well. A pacemaker is for patients who are more at risk of having heart failure after a heart attack because their heart is not beating at a regular pace. “Pacemakers also can monitor and record your heart’s electrical activity and heart rhythm. Newer pacemakers can check your blood temperature, breathing rate, and other factors. They also can adjust your heart rate to changes in your activity” (“Cardiac Implants: Stents, Valves, Pacemakers”). When getting a pacemaker implanted it is generally an easy-going surgery, but some problems could occur. The problems that could occur are bleeding, swelling, bruising, or infection in the area where the pacemaker is placed. There could be other types of damage like an allergic reaction, or a collapsed lung too.

Composed of muscle, bone, or other tissues, implants can be permanently inserted or removed when they are no longer needed. Steel, glass, or ceramic implants tend to remain in the body. Stents or hip implants, for example, are generally permanent. But when no longer needed, chemotherapy ports and screws can be removed to repair broken bones (“Center for Devices and Radiological Health”). A hip implant is generally for older people. When people get their hip replaces it is typically because they have pain caused by arthritis, and other hip injuries or diseases. Customized hip replacements fit the patient’s needs. The new hip has unique features such as size, form and material, and dimensions of its design. Although, when people get hip surgery it may not always go smoothly and have risks. A few of those risks are a reaction to the anesthesia, heart attack, wound infection, excessive bleeding, and blood clots.

Neurological implants are technological implants that connect directly to the human brain. “Deep brain stimulation uses a surgically implanted, battery-operated medical device called a neurostimulator. The neurostimulator is similar to a heart pacemaker and is approximately the size of a stopwatch. The stimulator delivers electrical stimulation to targeted areas in the brain that control movement, blocking the abnormal nerve signals that cause tremors and other symptoms of Parkinson\’s”(Schoenstadt). Stimulators help lessen the side effects of conditions such as epilepsy, stroke, and depression.

Medical implants permanently or temporarily repair and heal injuries. The use of implanted materials to promote tissue regeneration is becoming a problem to solve. The implants are important to different aspects of the medical field (Rychly and Nebe). When using an implant there are many different implants that surgeons throughout the world use. Some implants are just for structural support, while others interact directly with the body by sending tiny shockwaves. When someone gets an implant, they need to understand that the surgeons crafted that certain implant specifically for what the patient needs. A few complications that could occur with any implant is that the patient could have an infection, risk of rejection, or even coagulation. The benefit of having an implant that a person desperately needs outweighs the fear of the complications. The fear is nothing compared to the happiness people feel when they realize they can now live a better life.
