The texts chosen are ‘Trafficking: The Reality of Violence Against Women’ a speech delivered by H.E Samira Bawumia who is a Ghanaian politician also the Second Lady of the Republic of Ghana, and ‘Causes & Effects of Human Trafficking’ published in 2018 by Micah Hartmann. These two texts were utilized to investigate the reasons against human trafficking around the world.
According to both texts, human trafficking are caused by many different reasons. The main cause of human trafficking is traffickers. The traffickers aim on the victims’ weakness and use expert manipulation tricks to cheat and control their victims.
As Hartmann said that, most victims are the one who are living in poverty especially women such as widow or single mother. They struggles to provide basic need for their children and they were lured oversea with promise of munificent salary for jobs. UN Women shows that 70% of the human trafficking victims are women and girls. Number of adult women victims were 50% of the total number of trafficked people, and about 70% child victims of human trafficking are young girls.
Hartmann claimed that lack of knowledge is also a main reason why the victims were deceived. The traffickers offer an attractive job for the victims to work oversea and the victims may not be familiar with the nation’s law or their rights. In addition, the victims are trafficked form countryside to cities. Thus, the traffickers take advantage from these kind of situation. Statistics by The Global Slavery Index in Samira’s speech show that 45.
8 million people are in some form of modern slavery in 167 countries. Samira also uses anecdotes in recounting the story of Latifa, the exploited girl from Kuwait. She was promised an economic heaven and being lured oversea, but she came back with nothing. Fortunately, she was rescued and helped in treatment by her country. These anecdotes also appeal to the audience’ emotions and sense of justice.
Another argument is that human trafficking bring incurable physical, emotional and psychological effects to the victims. Samira mentioned that the victims are never able to go through the injury and consequences for the rest of their lives. According to Hartmann, victims who rescued from the traffickers might lack of independent living skills since they may have been trafficked at a young age and live under the control of traffickers. The United Nations claimed that the victims usually were suffered in the situation of limited freedom. Therefore, those victims might also be ostracism since they become outlying by their family, friends and the society. This may due to the traffickers specially located them at a place that get away from other community. Moreover, they also go through severe physical and mental abuse at the hands of their ‘owners’. Samira emphasizes her stand against human trafficking by repeating the phrase ‘let us’ in reference to supporting an execution ever again.
Samira vows her personal support that violence against women does not just concern women. In her perspective, she believe there are different effective ways to handle the fight against human trafficking.
To conclude, it is surely not an easy job for the society to be alert and immersed themselves into this issue yet this conference should be well-known by public and it is not enough to enact anti-human trafficking laws. Various organizations like UN Women are involve in the war against human trafficking. Hence, human trafficking rates should be reduced by educating the society in a civilized manner and with the cooperation of society.
