Racial Profiling: Good or Bad

Categories: RaceRacial Profiling

Racial profiling is something that takes place constantly even if we’re aware of it or not. Although civil rights have improved very very much over the years, racial profiling has become a lot worse. Racial profiling is when the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense.

Racial profiling has been going on since 1642 in the US when a Maryland man named John Elkin confessed to the murder of an American Indian leader named Yowocomco.

(ThoughtCo.) Racial profiling has continued to get worse and has grown with the population. One of the biggest turns for racial profiling was the events that took place on one of the darkest days in US history, September 11, 2001. On this day, Two Passenger airplanes were flown into New York’s beloved twin towers. This was a day that many many loved ones were killed and a day were our country really went through the grieving process. Nothing like this has ever happened before and it was a shocking and terrifying event for us all.

This event was carried out by Al-Queda. Al-Queda is a group that has made a pledge of loyalty to Bin Laden. These men were from Saudi Arabia and to this day when you see a person from this ethnicity or those alike, it always makes you a little weary. This is one of the most common forms of racial profiling.

Another very common form is that of police officers and African Americans. Even when a person of color is completely innocent, police still take extra precautions that sometimes result in death.

Situations like these are so difficult because you really never know what someone is thinking and sometimes the authorities judge to quickly. There is a way to be caucious but remain safe and this is something that lives on a very fine line. It has been said that people of color live in so much fear that they are in danger everyday, but it has also been known that people of noncolor live in just as much fear because they are also scared that something will happen to them. If only we lived in a world where we could trust everyone.

I think that racial profiling is good to a certain extent. People are constantly coming in and out of our country and its important to be aware of that. I personally am not racist in anyway but i say that knowing that I profile people based on their race all of the time. I don’t believe in going off of stereotypes but people believe in or grew up practicing different things than I did, therefore it can cause a bit of worry to our safety at times. I am so grateful that this is something I’ve never really had to deal with because of my race. I sometimes get profiled as a dumb teenage white girl, but never to the extent that some people have to face and I am so thankful that that isn’t a huge worry in my life.
