Puritans Vs. My Dad

Categories: Life experience

Many years ago (40 long years ago) my dad was born, he was born on an army base due to my grandfather and my grandmother living on one, he was born in California and spent roughly 5 years there. My father was raised in a very traditional household, the mother stayed home and took care of him and his father worked and provided. With this traditionalistic lifestyle, he was raised with the Christian church at heart, he learned that to earn time to play he needed to work hard but with this in mind, he had plenty of playtimes.

My padre and his family consisting now of a new sister moved to Idaho where my grandfather was raised, the family also moved because crime rampant in California had become too dangerous. The rest is straightforward he graduated high school in Emmett then got a degree in engineering. Many things have changed in those 40 years, but my dad has also changed. My Baba (dad in Swahili) has learned that both men and women are equal and if they feel they want to work they should, he also believes that the household should be equally run by both sides of the gender spectrum.

On the other hand, my father is very similar to his old self and his father, he still views the world in a traditional Christian sense, he understands that if he wants to have fun he needs to work for it and use work as a motivation to have fun. This aspect of my Vader (dad in Dutch) and even his Vader is connected to the Puritans, the Puritans believed that work is done in God's will and is done to appease him.

The Puritan lifestyle is described as; harsh, rough, unsatisfying, etc. this is derived from the fact that the people had to live by very strict rules and this made common life miserable especially for women. The Puritan religion is very patriarchal or in other words run by men. In this time this was very normal and in fact encouraged by a lot of old-time religions, anyway, with a patriarchy brewing women were treated with very little respect and were raised to be a babysitter, housemaids, and cook while the men were being bred with their governmental future in mind which means they were raised as politicians or church heads. If the original Puritans were around today they would no doubt have a heart attack and this due to the civil rights that everyone deserves, they would keel over if they saw a woman running for president and even winning.

Like it should my dad sees everyone as equal no matter your skin color or gender, but as stated before my dad has a Christian outlook on life which means he doesn’t want anyone to push their views on him and he will keep to himself, the Puritans were different. The reformers pushed their beliefs on the people who thought otherwise, like the native Americans. This is shown when the sermon giver Johnathan Edwards when he was pushed out of the church he moved to the natives and began to try to reform them. Another reason puritans would freak out in the modern-day is because of how religiously independent a huge portion of the population.

The Puritans persecuted anyone that didn’t look eye to eye with religiously which is ironic because that’s exactly why they left England. Puritans left England to evade religious persecution and to reform the church in their eyes but when they had come in power in America they had become just like the church they descended from but maybe more miserable and strict. They brought their views to America and forced them on the people like the previous church and in some sense, some remanence of that remains and wasn’t addressed up until recently. As discussed in the body of this paragraph my father was raised with a similar view of women as the Puritans but over time this had been reformed along with many other issues. In the end, the old-time religion had solved many issues of their past but raised many more and we, as reasonable people, overcame some of those issues and flipped this country on its head.
