Project Management in Construction Process

Know the roles and responsibilities of, and interaction between, the parties involved at each stage of a construction process

Understand the resources required to complete a construction project Scenario

All construction projects need to be planned. They require physical resources (materials, plant and machinery) and human resources (people with a variety of skills). In this assignment, you will learn about: the stages involved in constructing a low-rise building. You will learn about the teams that are involved in these projects, and understand the roles and responsibilities of the main parties.

how to identify the physical and human resources required to complete simple construction projects. organisational charts and the inter-relationships within and between teams. SC Construction has been contracted to build a new nursery facility for a primary school. The nursery will consist of classrooms, cloakrooms, welfare facilities, reception area, toilets (with separate facilities for staff and children), kitchen area, storage for resources, an outside play area, parent and staff car parking, music room and quiet area.

A major concern is the health and safety of the children currently at school during construction.

It has been decided that the physical and human resources used on site for the build must be kept to a minimum for safety reasons. SC Construction has appointed a management team to oversee the project. This team has been asked to produce a report on the various stages of the construction work. Each stage of this construction project will require planning and scheduling. This is to ensure that the necessary raw materials and physical resources are available at each stage, and that the workforce on site has the right skills for the scheduled work.

The project management team will need to produce a series of planning documents that can be accessed throughout the project. Each member of the project management team must know their role and responsibilities, including which sections of the workforce they will be directly managing.

Task 1

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P1. (identify the various stages of the construction process for a low-rise domestic or commercial building) SC Construction has asked you to produce an annotated flow diagram that identifies the different stages of the construction process required to build the nursery.

Task 2

Task 2a provides evidence for grading criterion P2 (describe the roles and interrelationships of the members of the building team involved in resource management, planning and production.) Task 2b provides evidence for grading criteria M1 (produce organisational charts to explain the group dynamics of team working.) (a)Describe the roles of the members of the building team and the inter-relationships between the members of the building team that will be involved in the planning, resource management and construction of the nursery. (b)You need to explain the group dynamics of and the inter-relationships between, the different teams involved in the project. To do this, use organisational charts and flow diagrams to help you illustrate the dynamics and inter-relationships. Provide two organisational charts — one that shows the team management and the middle managers, and the other showing the site manager and the trade and craft operatives. Add a written explanation to support the information in these diagrams.

Task 3

This task provides evidence for grading criterion P3. (discuss the resources required to complete a construction project)

SC Construction now wants you to consider the physical and human resources required to undertake the nursery project. Consider each stage that you identified in Task 1. Make a list to give to your line manager of all the equipment that would be needed to complete each stage of the project. Once your list is complete, discuss the workforce requirements for each stage, in terms of estimated number of personnel and the specific skills needed on site.

Task 4

This task provides evidence for grading criterion M2 (compare the advantages and disadvantages of resource management techniques).

The management team has come under pressure from the client about the progress of the build. It requires some help in dealing with this issue as soon as possible. It has requested a report on the following resource management techniques: critical path analysis (CPA)

Gantt charts/ bar charts
method study
computer-based scheduling
work measurementProduce a report that compares these techniques their usefulness for planning and managing construction projects. Clearly set out the advantages and
disadvantages of each technique.

Task 5

This task provides evidence for grading criterion D1 (compare two software systems that can facilitate planning, organisation and control processes).

The nursery project is in its final stages and nearing completion. The management team encountered significant problems along the way and it thinks that some of these could have been avoided if it had used software to plan, organise and control processes. Several software systems can facilitate the planning, organising and control of construction projects. These include:

Microsoft Project (MSP)
TurboProject
Asta Powerproject.
Produce a report that compares two software systems that can be used to plan and control construction projects. Set out the advantages and disadvantages of each system.

Evidence checklist
[Summarise evidence required, e.g. ‘leaflet’, ‘presentation notes’ etc.] [tick boxes]
Annotated flow diagram
