There are several weak points in the introductory paragraph. First, the opening sentence refering to humankind’s god-given ability to make choices is too general as a discussion point for decision-making in college. Second, the writer fails to establish coherence in his introduction. For instance, the ideas jump drastically from the “God-given ability to make choices” to the fact that “one is faced with a multiplicity of choices” without establishing why the writer thinks that decision-making is “one of the most splendid – and incommodious – things about the condition of being human.

” Thus, the first line could even be ommitted from the introduction as it does not help construct the writer’s thesis in any way. Likewise, the paragraph suffers from too much excitement due to the writer’s fondness for exclamation points. It would also be better if the writer used much simpler words and refrained from using words such as “ad infinitum” which might not be understood by his or her readers. Lastly, the introduction sounds like a marketing spiel for University with the writer drawing hasty conclusions such as “I chose university and I could not be happier.

” It also has the effect of concluding the essay at the introductory part, making the reader feel disinterested in the “rewards” that the writer wants to illustrate. On the other hand, this introduction also has its strengths. Aside from the opening line, the rest of the ideas are clearly developed; the writer is able to establish the “multiplicity of choices” from a simple choice of gum flavor to one’s lifestyle. The writer’s informal style could also be engaging for the characteristics of its audience—young, newly-graduated or about to graduate from high school—as they could identify with the language.

I remember getting excited about the independence and the freedom that college life would bring. Indeed, balancing academic and social priorities can pose a serious challenge to any student.

For one, academic expectations at the University are definitely more stringent than high school which makes coping with the academic pressures difficult. There are times when course requirements and other schoolwork take up not only one’s waking but even sleeping hours. In my experience, these activities even invade my dreams; completing these tasks also entailed devoting enough time and attention so that there are times when I have had to give up the need to take a bath to finish a paper or an assignment.

Maintaining grade requirements also meant turning in excellent work which required painstaking attention to detail and perseverance on the part of the student. This means studying ahead of one’s lessons and making sure that the professor at least knows your name by participating actively in class. In the same manner, social activities and adapting to cultural differences can also add to the stress of university life.

The need to conform to a vastly different culture than one’s own can take its toll on the individual who is expected to be able to accept differences in values and norms within and between different student groups and individuals. It is also not uncommon for students to feel distressed by peer pressure. There have been times when I felt compelled to indulge my friends in idle chat despite having an exam to study or a requirement to be completed.

On the other hand, it would be a mistake to see university life as merely a quest for a high grade point average. A student also needs socialization with his or her peers not only because this is how one learns to interact with others but it is something that is necessary for survival in a competitive and oftentimes harsh environment. Although there are some students who prefer to be alone and detached from the rest of the world, I think most of us need friends if only to have someone with whom we can share our daily existence with.

It is not surprising that many university students are involved with one or more organizations; more than the sense of belonging, involvement also ensures that one has friends whom he or she can run to for help in time of distress. Thus, the ability to meet academic expectations without sacrificing one’s social life is a necessary survival skill which one needs to develop if he or she wants to successfully get through the rigours of university life. This usually requires the development of self-discipline and maintaining a clear sense of priorities.

I often have to remind myself that the primary reason I am here is to study and learn as much as I can both inside and outside the classroom so I can at least have a chance at success once I graduate. This means having to turn down several party invitations, reigning in impulses and tendencies to settle for a mediocre paper, and persevering to understand not only things but people in my environment. Afterall, we only live through university life once—unless of course, we are planning on taking post-graduate studies but even then it would probably have its own unique difficulties—so we should strive to make the most of it.
