Mary pushes her religion onto stephen and The Dedalus Children.These personality traits can be found in people in our everyday lives and we have our own opinions about them and their situations. How do characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes? Stephen believes one thing as a young man, does something he will regret, does it more and more, then wants to change himself and his habits.

Mainly stephen because he wants to do good but becomes involved things he doesn't fully understand the effects of his actions. Are the minor characters as thoroughly portrayed as major ones? How or how not? Yes because the traits of his mother and father greatly impact stephens actions and base morals. How do the characters use interesting and natural dialect? Is the dialect used appropriately? How or how not?

The dialect is used to show stephens ignorance and youthfulness of the things he hears. I think it is because it is used when there is a need to show how different it is from english and how irish can be a language that expresses class level and differences between maturity levels. “moocow coming down along the road and this moocow that was coming down along the road met a nicens little boy named baby tuckoo. . . . His father told him that story: his father looked at him through a glass: he had a hairy face. He was a baby tuckoo. The moocow came down the road where Betty Byrne lived: she sold lemon platt.”

He doesn't want people to make the same mistakes he made as a young man, and with stephen going back to being religious show that joyce wants that to be his legacy and what he believes in the most. Did certain parts of the book make you uncomfortable? If so, why did you feel that way? Did this lead to a new understanding or awareness of some aspect of your life you might not have thought about before? No, I’m comfotable with writings about intercoures and intamacy. “The letters cut in the stained wood of the desk stared upon him, mocking his bodily weakness and futile enthusiasms and making him loathe himself for his own mad and filthy orgies.”

Style and Technique. In what ways does the author’s word choice make use of connotation and/or colloquialisms? The author uses the ignorance of the characters to add meaningful connotation that only some people could understand the author's true stylistic choices.

What is the tone of the book? Or is there more than one? Explain. Remorseful - although there are sub tones this is in my opinion the main because, stephen followed after his father and reflects on his life and choices to influence his decisions. Is the author’s style straightforward or symbolic? Do the symbols used add to the impact of the book? Why are they used? Symbolic. Yes. they add effect to the characters statements. Green is associated with parnell and maroon is associated with michael. This simplification makes them appear in harmony but later are discovered to be in dissonance because of aunt dante “cutting off the green velvet”.

Evaluation.

What are the values or weaknesses of this book for modern readers?There are alot of traits found in the characters that can be reflective of our current lives. Like when he has sex with the first prostitute and doesn't feel guilt at first but then he realises the extent of his actions “Between them he felt an unknown pressure, darker than the swoon of sin”.

Is the book a valuable reading experience? Why or why not? Yes, it teaches that actions have consequences and you should learn from your mistakes which are two extremely valuable tools to have for life. In what way does this book give the reader any special understanding of human psychology—of how people think and act? Are factors such as greed, ambition, hate, love or the will to serve others seen as influencing people? It shows how much of an influence your parents are on your life but sometimes kids don't believe in the same thing completely so they go against it. All of the factors listed are ways of influencing people because they all involve a second party.

How does the book deal with the questions of right and wrong? Do you agree with the stand taken by the book on ethical questions? The book deals with this through stephens perspective. I do not agree with some of it because people make mistakes and i don't think that religion is the answer to a major mistake. What new ideas or clarification of old ideas came to you from reading this book? The idea that what your parents say can either show up in you or you will do the opposite.
