Philosophy of Education
Abstract The main goal of a Marketing-Business teacher is to expand the business knowledge within the students you teach. This should be done by realistic marketing and business activities and experiences. Throughout this paper I explain how the roles of the teacher, education, and curriculum influence the outcome of the marketing business teachings, along with what the philosophies that I can relate to. Introduction In this paper I will share my views on what education means in my eyes.
I will talk about what I think each of the following categories mean to me, on the role of curriculum, education, and what it means to be a teacher. In the paper I also discuss the main philosophies of education and break down the styles of teaching and show what ways best describe me as an educator. Role of Education As we all know education is a very serious topic in the United States today and plays an extremely large part in society. Education serves as a means of kids to gain a better perspective on the ever changing world around them. Schools should be a safe environment open to any child.
Education teaches kids many different things that will help them become successful in whatever path they choose, either to higher education or entering into the work place. Schools offer many basic life skills aside from just simple reading and arithmetic, such as learning how to communicate and work with others around them. I believe the overall definition of the role of education is best said by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, “Education should be a means to empower children and adults alike to become active participants in the transformation of their societies” (UNESCO).
What Should be Taught Teaching marketing and business in the classroom is a little bit different than most other education areas. In today’s competitive business world there almost is no right or wrong anymore and that is the beauty of teaching these ideas. For the most part, being skilled goes hand in hand with being knowledgeable in this career. Persuasive-reasoning skills and technology skills are the two that stick out the most to me. With rapidly changing technologies in the business world it is exceedingly important to be skilled with computers.
In lower level classes basic programs and designs should be taught or at the least introduced so students can gain some insight on computers. You should have a good marketing mind and be able to really “sell” your material to your students. This means transferring that same thought process over to your students as well. Communication and professionalism are also very important areas that should be emphasized within the curriculum. These things can be taught while having the students give mock product presentations and business style writing assignments. Role of the Teacher.
One of the most important qualities of being a marketing/business teacher; is being knowledgeable of the content of what you are going to be teaching firsthand. So, knowledge is definitely a huge part to being a successful teacher. Being a successful teacher when teaching business classes, to me means really being able to connect your students and give them insight to the ever changing ideas about business and marketing. Being prepared is something that is important for just about any job but is even more so in teaching. Being on time is crucial when commanding a classroom.
You cannot except a class to think you are a credible teacher or respect you when you are never prepared yourself. If you do not have your own schedule and curriculum organized, more than likely the students are not going to take what you say very seriously. And that goes for just about anything from being on time to class, to setting due dates for assignments. Philosophy Alignment I decided that I would say I am most closely related to epistemology. Epistemology fits the closest to how I view myself as student and also how I would conduct a classroom.
The philosophical ideas that epistemology presents when applied in the classroom I feel will always benefit the student. I feel that everything done at school should allow the student to come away with knowledge of some sort. School is meant to learn so everything that is done within school should be geared towards acquiring knowledge at every step. I agree with the way epistemology addresses logically thinking as one of the foremost important steps in learning. If problems are thought through logically they can be solved or bring up questions that will lead to further knowledge gained.
Not all “knowledge” is limited to just bookwork, or simply how much can be memorized, but instead what knowledge can be taken away from situations and problems. Even fun activities for students can serve as helpful learning tools and should always have an underlying effect of teaching the student something. For an educational philosophy I would have to say I side with progressivism. I agree with Oregon State’s education program when then they say progressivism, “stresses that students should test ideas by active experimentation.
” Students will learn the most through cooperation with others and problem solving real problems other than constant bookwork. Everything that is taught should allow the students to move to the next step in life whatever that may be. Conclusion Everything I do in my day to day life is what forms my personal philosophy of education. How I like to learn, communicate, act, and what I believe in all contribute to what philosophies I consider myself to use and how I plan to educate students in the future.
Overall I am going to use this knowledge in my future teachings and plan on looking back on my education classes when going on to be a teacher in whatever school system that may be.
