Phenomenology of Illness and Disease

The Death of Ivan Ilych by Tolstoy is a novella, which is based on a story of a high court judge who faced a lot of suffering from his terminal sickness, which eventually led to his death (Tolstoy, Slater, & Kahn, 2015). The three concepts of the "healing environment" include the seen environment, which is composed of the physical environmental aspects and the unseen environment, which includes the things, which are seen by faith (Shelly & Miller, 2006).

The storied environment is also a healing environment, which involves an understanding of hope, which is an expectation of achieving certain goals in a difficult situation.

The phenomenology of illness and disease is part of human life with different understanding of illnesses and death (Shelly & Miller, 2006).

This is a universal aspect to all humankind but individuals have different experiences due to the diverse contexts, which provide different meaning. Medical science has tried to provide answers to the aspect of illnesses and disease but some of the questions remain unanswered (Shelly & Miller, 2006). This is because medical science relies mainly on biological investigations neglecting individual's interpretation and evaluation on diverse health situations. Illnesses and disease affect the health status of individuals in different aspects, which include pain, fear, feelings of hopelessness, and hindrance in how individuals normally run normal activities (Shelly & Miller, 2006). Disease and illnesses affect the normal state of individuals through biological malfunctioning.

A personal analysis of my own experience with illness and disease involves a condition of being unhealthy in the mind and body, which affects the normal functioning of the body and mind (Shelly & Miller, 2006). Some of the factors that colored this experience is the inability to continue with normal life activities as well as fear. Environment also colored this experience with disease and illnesses leading to a solitary environment, which negatively affected emotional as well as physical development (Shelly & Miller, 2006). The Death of Ivan Ilych has some common experiences on disease and illnesses that include fear and the feeling of hopelessness due to the suffering associated with disease and illnesses. It was difficult for Ivan to grasp the issue of mortality that was inevitable which is a common thing for individuals suffering from chronic illnesses (Tolstoy, Slater, & Kahn, 2015).
