Perception of Power in the Media

There are all different types of media such as broadcast, television, radio, advertising, movies, the internet, newspaper articles, magazines, and so on. People find out information about the world by the news or social media. While this information helps shape someone's opinions or views about the world, it also shapes their attitudes toward the media.

The media may include or be targeted to the way specific topics are covered by news media. Attitudes toward media have been shown to be important because they affect a person of social and political behaviors and they have received a great amount of attention.

Betty Warren uses her power in the school newspaper to write about how the school nurse gave out contraceptives to a student. Betty Warren did not agree with the school nurse’s actions and ended up getting the nurse fired due to the article.

The media has so much influence on people's everyday lives. Nowadays people with power have the most influence on media in the United States and all over the world.

For, example take Emma Watson. She has a high social media following and people look up to her not only for fashion but also for her political views. Emma Watson is a highly respectable and educated woman just like Katherine Ann Watson in Mona Lisa Smile. In Mona Lisa Smile Katherine Ann Watson is a history professor at a prestigious all-female school, Wellesley College. Despite Wellesley College’s academics the school measures success on how well the student marries.

Again Warren uses her power to write about Watson in the school paper. The administration wanted to let Watson go but due to her high enrolment for the following semester, they could not go through with it. Women have a lot of power but due to their maternal way of thinking. Mills talks about how our private lives are a series of traps. By this Mills is referring to how life is very unexpected and never know what is going to happen next. Someone in private life they can seem so normal but really be a monster inside.

Powerful people and social icons have a great deal of influence over which forms of media today. People with power over the media decide what the public is and is not exposed to. Media can be a good and a bad thing. Media sometimes can be a negative thing because people are so influenced by it especially young kids. Society sees these attractive, thin, beautiful, and young celebrities and wants to be just like them. Every day people have less power over media than someone who is wealthy. In the film 15 Minutes, the characters Emil Slovak and Oleg Razgul come to America to collect money from someone that Slovak let borrow while he was in jail.

Throughout their journey, Razgul records everything Slovak does to document Slovaks life when Slovak becomes famous. The two men think they can sell their “documentary” and fool the media that Slovak is mentally ill. This just shows that people will try to manipulate the media just to get somewhere in life. This happens in everyday life as well. People will sell stories to the press just to get famous or recognized. As a society, people have put a tremendous amount of trust in the media on a range of topics, and people rely on accurate information on current events, entertainment, and education.

The media can be helpful in someone's everyday life but it can be an equally harmful thing to follow. Today the media shapes people's attitudes about things from what people buy, to what people admire. Media also helps shape people's perceptions of political issues like immigration and health care, to social issues such as race, gender, sexual orientation, and age. The power of the media has also increased ideas as more people are able to access information through the media. Today people rely on the information given in the media to be true. Media is just going to keep getting popular as time goes one so why not write the truth.
