The Immigrant (2008) is set in the seventies in the period between Indira Gandhi in India and Pierre Trudeau in anada. India at that time was going through much social and political reform. In order to avoid such political and social climate in India many Indians decided to move to Canada. This is one of the reasons for Nina to move to Canada. It was around the 1960s and 1970s US and Canada changed their immigration policies for Asians. They were ready to accepted new comers with open arms.

Canadian government introduced many immigration laws and policies and invited people from European and non-European countries to apply for immigration. The protagonist Nina migrates to Canada under the family reunification class via marriage to her Canadian Indian-born husband. The family reunification class was one of the first immigrant classes in which women immigrants were allowed to come to Canada.

The novelist has exposed the grief of her protagonist in the foreign land. Here the author clearly represents the alienation and nostalgia felt by an NRI which is an experience of her own homesickness when she studied at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where she got her Master of Arts in English. Like Nina the female protagonist of the novel, Kapur also graduated from Miranda House University College for Women, and she is also teaching English literature at her alma mater in Miranda House. In her interview with Sukhmani Khorana Kapur describes her experience as a scholar in Canada: "I experienced being away from India when I was a student in Canada in my youth, so I wanted to write about it. I recall feeling alienated and being nostalgic for the foods and objects that I took for granted at home. I chose to return to India" .

Nina faces the problem of settlement in Canada. She believes that she will control all the things and definitely have a better future in the foreign country. Ananda and Nina are the newly married couple, struggle to modify their life in Canadian society. Ananda continuously says to Nina about the difference of the countries. Actually, he determines of foreign lifestyle. But, Nina is still new to the country. On the contrary, Ananda never welcomes the traditional behaviour of Nina. She really confuses whether to wear traditional or western clothes. While analyzing the values of Indian and Western, remarks Ashok Kumar says:

Nina's character in the light of Indian traditions, we may conclude it calling it a triumph of feminism. But considering the character of Nina in the light of western social and moral conduct we can pass it as a normal conduct nothing to cheer up. The feminist theory is dependent upon certain set of social and cultural traditions.

Even though the country is completely unknown, she always imagines her better future. She thinks that the education provides her life filled with beautiful thing so Nina wants to get an admission in Library field. She feels differently when she attends the classes of library degree and her first friendship experience with a white man, Anton. Afterwards in the company of Anton, Nina feels freedom and there is no burden of responsibility. Though she encounters the extra martial affairs, she has no guilt about this affair.
