Oasis and Its Role

Categories: Theory

After a long wait following the set of the Happy Mondays, the 70,000 strong crowd eagerly await the arrival of their heroes. Football style chants of "Oasis, Oasis" fill the stadium, and a great cheer goes up as a recording of the instrumental f***** in the bushes, from latest release Sosg indicates the wait will soon be ended. As the crowd bounce around a giant sized Wonderball, images and lyrics dazzle us upon the large screens at the rear of the stage.

Make no mistake, oasis are back and once again they're here to make history.

As the last notes of F***** in the bushes fades out, the band appear led by the younger of the Gallagher brothers Liam, who proudly raises his arms to acknowledge the roar of the crowd. Then in true Gallagher style he swaggers over to the mike to proclaim that "Wembley is a s***hole" and "it's about time they knocked it down"

A cheeky reference to Manchester brings a smile from Noel and they launch into "Go let it out" Liam adopts his famous stance, hands behind back, leaning into the mike as videos of London play behind him.

The song has a raw energy live that perhaps it lacks on the record and it's definitely apparent that new members Andy Bell (Bass) and Gem archer (Guitar) give a new depth to the band, absent from Oasis mk1.

As the last Chord of "Go let it out" fades out were taken straight into "Who feels love" referred to by its writer as hippy like.

Once again the fantastic video forms the backdrop and the crowd are "mad for it" "I'll let you off" remarks Liam as the song ends and he shouts his own name; naturally they join in. As the familiar drumbeat to "Supersonic" kicks in the crowd bounce up and down in rhythm, you're suddenly taken back to 1994 when the single was released upon the Dance dominated British charts. Noel's eyes light up as he picks the intro; he knows it's an amazing song. The crowd sing every word; its sound engulfs the stadium.

Next comes "Shakermaker" the second single from "Definitely Maybe". Even if it does sound like "I'd like to teach the world to sing" it's still a top tune. "Who the fu** is Andy Bell?" comments Noel as he smiles at his new guitarist and next we're treated to the dual vocal delight of b-side Acquiesce. The song is definitely one Oasis manage to pull off well live; the fanatical Wembley crowd helps Noel's vocals, perhaps a little weak on this occasion. Magic. Next a song unusual to the Oasis live set is "step out" fronted by Noel it gives Liam the chance for a break. He takes a seat at the back of the stage, casting his eyes upon the crowd. Although only the B-side to "Don't look back in anger", "Step out", like many other Oasis b-sides is a great song. Noel sings it like any other Oasis hit.

Liam returns "This ones for all the potheads," a reference possibly to his new clean lifestyle as a father. "Gas panic" is one of those songs that sits awkwardly on the not so well received Sosg. A more personal song of Noel's many think its not what Oasis are really about; however live as with the other new tunes it does Noel justice as a song writer. Tonight they play it in a different key to the record, possibly the reason why it sounds so bright and fresh. As the song finishes Noel toys with the girls near the front " This ones for all the posh birds down the front," he declares "Roll with it" is a song that sums up the band's attitude from day one. "We're the best band in the world, and we'll do what we want!" It goes down well. Liam being forever the joker decides to entertain himself and the crowd by asking for some breasts to be put on the screen behind him. He then digs at his brother's idea of adopting a phone box as a stage prop on the last tour and they play on. " Stand by me," number one in September of 1997 is simply an anthem. Possibly the best song from Be Here Now, it's the only one they play tonight.

If you played the opening chords of "Wonderwall" to anyone the chances are they would have heard it a million times before. It's Oasis' most perfect song, a masterpiece and Liam really sings his heart out. Well at least until the second chorus. Making remarks to "Mikey" Liam doesn't seem to be too impressed with the lights that appear to be shining directly into his eyes. The crowd finish the song without him. Next comes "Cigarettes and Alcohol" which is followed by a bit of Led Zeppelin's "Whole lotta love" cleverly tagged on the end. If Wembley stadium had a roof it would have fallen victim to Oasis` huge sound.

Classics "Don't look back in anger" and "Live forever" follow as the gig enters its closing stages. The latter proves to be the best song of the night. The reality is we could be here all night such, is the number of modern day classics Noel has given us.

"Thank you, goodnight," says Liam, but we know we've got a few more left to come. Neil Young's "Hey hey, my my" is probably a song most here tonight would be too young to know. "I am the walrus" would have probably gone down better. Despite that it's been a memorable night and it's not over yet. "Champagne supernova" a song that should have been a single is truly the band at there best "Where were you while we were getting high" sings Liam. The answer is "Were here, right now"

But it's all got to end somewhere and what a way to do so "Rock and roll star" "Everyone of you" declares Noel and Oasis make you believe it!
