Essay, Pages 4 (793 words)
For decades, humans use natural resources for their development. Today, we pay for this exploitation. Human lifestyle are responsible of many effects on environment: global warming, climate change, depletion of Ozone layer, deforestation, pollution, extinction of species… With depleting resources of nature, certain ways to save the environment have to be formulated. But who can do something to save the planet: people or governments? This essay will discuss this issue. Firstly, during years, people doesn’t pay attention to the environment in spite of scientists warning of a global warming and its consequences in the future.
Now, my feeling is that more and more people are awakening to the fact that their survival depends on the well-being of the environment. However, certain persons are always “blind” facing environmental degradation. Ones like their comfort and they don’t want to change their habits. The others might think that saving the environment is the duty of governments or they are still skeptical. I believe they are wrong about that.
A part of global warming have been man-made and we must accept responsibility for that.
It is true that it would be difficult actually to leave without technology (phones, computers, cars…) and the sources of our life in general. We are very dependent on it. Nevertheless, from my point of view, it is not a real reason and there are countless things that one can do in our own ways which will ensure that the pressure on the environment is lessened. It is not necessary to make drastic changes in our lifestyle.
For example, we can recycle as much as possible (composting, paper…) or reuse some stuff. I think it is the better way to protect nature. It is possible to make use of garbage disposals and to give up plastic bags.
In addition, we can save energy by using less energy-consuming bulbs or turning off lights when we leave a room; or save water by reduce amount of baths and switch over the shower. The use of vehicles need to be limited. So, people should prefer to walk. Summarizing, with these environmental ethics in mind, we should be able to do what we can individually, for the results to have a bigger impact on the planet. Secondly, no one doubts that governments have an obligation to take care of environment too. They often leave in doubt the validity of scientists’ theory and they mitigate the risks posed by climate change.
Actually, I feel that they make effort to correct their mistakes but they don’t realize the urgency of the situation: sea level rise, rise in temperatures, climate extremes, ice floe melt…Despite lots of summit, governments didn’t solve or procure methods for the damages done to the planet. It is just the way I see it. They should tackle global warning. Drastic measurements must be made against countries which don’t respect environmental targets. In fact, China and United States don’t take it seriously and continue to pollute with their emissions of toxic gases. How can we be concerned about environmental problems if they act like this?
I am convinced that it can affect people opinion about this question. It is commonly said that industrialization has been the hallmark of human progress. That is true. But, industries are a host of toxic gases released into atmosphere, sea and rivers. Governments must pass and implement strict laws for it. Those who are responsible for polluting air and water should be severely punished. It is essential to cut emissions of monoxide carbon that destroy the Ozone layer (protection against ultraviolet rays). Reforestation or re-greening the damaged area can help avoid desertification of land.
It is also necessary to boost renewal energies such as solar or wind energy. Our leaders have a huge amount of possibilities and means to protect the nature, much than public. In my opinion, they have no excuses because they have a big part of responsibility and they established the decisions for the nations and the world. They manage the economy and the natural resources, indispensable for our survival. As we can see, the topic of environment protection is quite complicated. However, we need to curb the destruction and reduce the negative impacts of civilization and technology.
The knowledge of environmental ethics should also help in the conservation of natural resources. To sum up, my opinion is that governments and people should make efforts. With the way the world is deteriorating from pollution, it’s time we did our bit to contribute as one guiding force. We have overworked the planet. Still, we can stop environment degradation by following certain rules. Creating awareness about the duties and responsibilities of the citizens of EARTH is equally important. Each one of us can make a valuable contribution towards preserving our environment.
