I’m honored to be admitted to Ireland’s best research-led University. My passion in life drew me to the National University of Ireland. My focus as an undergraduate has always been with an eye towards graduate school and a career as a professional biomedical engineer. Even as a little school girl I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. It was not a stereotypical child’s dream; my vision was instead something that has shaped my actions and decisions throughout my life.
In the years I have realized that my passion for bettering human life is a natural calling that I am destined to follow. It’s exciting when you’re able to help someone through your work.
While choosing a university to further follow my passion I heard about the most prestigious university with a distinguished record in teaching and research. The friendly, vibrant and exciting campus with state of the art academic and sporting facilities attracted me. I read that National University of Ireland, Galway had a course in MSc Biomedical engineering, I was sure that it is the course that would aptly suit my appetite. I felt that this course suits me perfectly, as it has a selection of many of the things that I have a desire to study further. I stand strong that the university offers the perfect blend of courses that could be a rigid foundation on which the zenith of my career may lie. With a burning desire to learn more and venture ahead in my favorite field, I applied for the graduate program in Biomedical Engineering that may ultimately stretch my passion of becoming a Biomedical Engineer.
It is my dream to be part of a team that would pioneer in biomedical engineering. Ever since I had discovered my passion in biomedical engineering, I wanted to extend my skills to better lives. My final year project was based on developing a biomaterial. Of the years spent in studying the course, I believe I have a liking to study biomaterials and biomechanics. My inner calling for research and thirst for exploiting new avenues in the field let me study keratin hydrogel for my final year project. The project started from the scratch, by extracting keratin from chicken feathers, preparing a hydrogel and then characterizing it for drug delivery studies. The notion to use feathers came in when I understood that they are non-biodegradable and posed a problem to the environment. The objective was to recycle chicken feathers and use it as a valuable bio-material. Ushered by Dr.A. Gnanamani, I was able to embark my journey on research on Bio-materials.
In order to augment the knowledge, I have gained from books I underwent an advanced training in the biomedical application at Harvey biomedical. It is a crash course that taught me testing, calibration, and troubleshooting of various critical care equipment. I also have attended hospital training at Apollo multispecialty hospital and Global health city, both in Chennai. The hospital training taught me about the hospital hierarchy and how a technical fault is being tackled by the staff. Even though academics needed my utmost attention, I paid heed to other activities such as organizing events during technical symposiums and also in participating in the intercollege symposium. Apart from building an academic profile, I was also involved in classical dance, Bharatanatyam which I learned for 7 years.
The gateway to my passion opened when I got the offer letter from NUI. Now I would like to apply for the scholarship. I believe that I would be a worthy recipient of the Scholarship. I secured the first class with distinction in my bachelors. During the study, I also had an opportunity to work along with the professors to organize an International Conference on Mathematical science in association with the University of Central Florida. This conference stimulated interest in Engineering Mathematics which in turn helped me secure the highest mark in Engineering Mathematics in the second semester. Coming from a developing country like India, receiving a scholarship that provides full tuition fee will give me the time and motivation to focus on classes while simultaneously participating actively in various activities organized by societies and clubs of the University.
