Players can play tag football or tackle football. Tackle football involves much more physical contact. Though football is a source of exercise, it can be dangerous if not played correctly. Protective equipment helps prevent injuries but is not a guaranteed measure in all cases. Risk of Long-Term Disorders In addition to short-term injuries, football players can experience long-term neurological disorders including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and depression years after their careers end.
Researchers at Boston University have determined that repetitive collisions involving brain trauma to football players can lead to CTE, a progressive disease that can lead to dementia. Also, a study by the American College of Sports Medicine showed that retired players who experienced three or more concussions in their careers had a much higher chance of being diagnosed with depression later in life than a player who never had a concussion.
