Shakespeare wrote 38 plays, 2 narrative poems, 154 sonnets, and a series of additional poems. He had touched the hearts of others to the point where a group of actors preserved his works so they will live beyond the sixteenth-century (“Shakespeare 1). Partially why he was popular was because his plays were not exclusive to high society, but also the common people. They found similarities to enjoy (Forster 1). WIthin the cities that sat near the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, American theatres were performing plays, especially Shakespeare.

The Western world grew cozy to Shakespeare. Politicians would pepper Shakespearean quotes into their speeches and men did not need an acknowledgement to understand who the legislator was citing (Hogeboom 1-3).

Dante’s, the Divine Comedy, was told in Tuskan rather than Latin, which helped the form become more popular. He also created a poetic scheme that later was common among Italian prose. Another writer, Giovanni Boccaccio wrote a treatise on Dante’s aforementioned work which led to Dante receiving an even larger following and acceptance as a poet (Badertscher 1).

Dante’s interests were not limited to writing as he also was a philosopher. While he was in exile, Dante wrote up treatises: one on the commentary of his own works, the other, talks if the connection of the languages greek and latin.

The Shakespeare walks among the dead, his works still speak to the living. They narrate the truth about humanity. He wrote in the tongue of sixteenth-century English and strung along metaphors that appeal to modern readers for their complexity.

ANd yet, he also evolved the language to mingle with his own style. While he was popular in his era, his true shining came centuries later in the nineteenth century and beyond. His works were recognizable in the dramatic arts. Presently, there are scholars of Shakespeare and his works are constantly being analyzed, given new theories on the text’s meaning. While his plays were often sanctioned off to one part of the world, they managed to capture the soul of humanity across the globe (“Shakespeare” 4-7).

Dante is considered to be one of “those rare poets who have profoundly stirred the imaginations of people everywhere since he penned works like the Divine Comedy and the Vita Nuova seven centuries ago.” (Davis 1). Dante had borne the pavement to modern poetry and his own identity, as an artist, supporter if nationalism and speech appealed to generations after him ( Pettingell 2). Partially Dante’s intention is for people to dig deeper into the true form of the universe (Burge 2). Dante further inspires the authors of the future to narrate their own commentary on the meaning of life and death (Pettingell 3).

To summarize, while Shakespeare and Dante may be writers that have reckoned the world, they shared more differences than similarities. Regardless of how contrasting their backgrounds, influences, accomplishments, and lasting impressions are, they still are the most famous writers in history, achieving what they could in their lifetimes.
