Personal Life - About Mother

My mother, born and grew on a ranch in Michoacan, Mexico. She is the oldest of 6 sons and daughters. She only attended school till the sixth grade. Because she was the oldest, she was expected to care for her younger siblings and run the ranch. At 17 she felt if she really wanted to support her family, she should get a good job. That only meant one thing, to cross the U.S./Mexico border and work in the United States. She had the "American Dream", (the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative).

Leaving behind her family and her hometown, she hopped on and headed for the United States. The ride wasn't perfect, the bus broke down three times on the way to the border. Once she arrived in Tijuana, her cousin who was already in the U.S., worried for her and sent someone from Los Angeles to meet her in San Diego.

Meanwhile, she crossed through the desert on foot. She traveled with two groups, she walked in the second group behind the first. Once in the United States, the first group was caught by immigration officials. She ran and hid as fast as she could in a backyard of a San Diego residence. She was so grateful to have not been caught. Later she met up with the person her cousin had sent and headed for Los Angeles. Years later she met, married my father, and earned her citizenship.

Since the our president was elected in 2016, Donald Trump has made a couple of big moves on immigration, like the refugee and travel ban executive order as well as his administration's zero-tolerance immigration policy. Trump's ban indefinitely suspends the issuance of immigrant and nonimmigrant visas to applicants from the Muslim-majority countries Libya, Iran, Somalia, Syria and Yemen; plus North Korea and Venezuela. Our vote in this year's midterms won't directly affect current immigration law. Congress has control over most immigration-related regulations because they are matter of federal law. In the midterms, we are casting our ballot for members of Congress. They are the ones who handle immigration law, so when we vote in the midterms, we are voting for the people who create those laws and regulations. We must vote for senators who will support immigrants in the U.S.

My vote matters because my mom and 37,000,000 legal immigrants that migrated the U.S. since 2000, want a better a better life for their families. They came as far as to migrate to a different country to work, risking everything to support their loved ones. My vote matters because an end needs to be put to these nonsense travel bans. My vote matters because there needs so be change in the way immigrants are treated. My vote matters because our xenophobic president must realize that hard-working immigrants are the heart and soul of this country.
