Introduction

The use of mobile phones in schools has become a hot topic debate by parents and teachers. People who support the use of phones claim that phones are to ensure a child’s safety by allowing them to communicate when necessary. On the other hand, oppositions believe that using mobile phones during school can cause disturbance and they may be used inappropriately. Rather than listening in class, children are spending time on their phones playing games or using social media.

Problem Definition

Phones are an extension of life today. Families are giving phones to their children to ensure their safety and to familiarize them of the real world. It is up to the person who wishes to use it effectively and gain an advantage or use it which can affect them in the long run.

Issues

Distraction

Students with smartphones in classrooms can discreetly utilize any function of a phone to distract themselves and other from the assigned task and activities.

Students can’t focus when they’re using social media on their phones says Dr. Patricia Foiriello. It also distracts other students who are trying to concentrate on the lesson. When using a phone in class, the student is unable to absorb the information that is being projected. This is because the student must divide their attention between the lesson and the phone and most like they will concentrate on their phones. This means valuable information is likely to be lost when a student uses their phones in classrooms.

Cheating

Students can take advantage of phones to seek out answers for tests or quizzes. They can also message others about possible questions in the exam. Additionally, students can listen to pre-recorded notes in tests using the new wireless earphones.

Disconnected from the real world

A student that possess a mobile phone may face a reduction or even elimination of communication with other people in the present day. Rather than socializing with their peers in school, children spend a lot of their time on social media meeting strangers. When phones are used in schools, there is a good possibility that students will be disconnected from the present.

Cyberbullying/Mature Content

One of the biggest issues related to the use of mobile phones is cyberbullying. Students may use their phones to embarrass or even harass peers by social media. They may record something humiliating or send hate messages which can lead to psychological instabilities in victims. Cyberbullying could also lead to sexting. Where sexual photos are messaged between two people. This at first may be harmless, but if forwarded to other or uploaded online, and can even lead to suicide or potential police cases. With the commonness of popups and phishing, a student may accidentally or intentionally access mature content which could get the student into trouble at school.

Health Concerns

Screens produce blue light which is known to be a stimulant to students who are dealing with hyperactive issues. It also suppresses the sleep hormone, which keeps them have a restful sleep which impacts their academic life.

Safety Issue

When using a phone to surf the web, student saves their personal information on the phone. Including their password to important pages, photos, videos, credit card details, etc. The device could potentially be hacked, and sensitive information could be leaked. This is a safety concern.

Advantages

Learning Opportunities

Phones provide education opportunities such as apps that can help students retain more information. They give students database of information in a matter of seconds. Not only can the student use such apps, but the teacher can use apps to learn about subjects or to engage with the students.

Personal Security

By possessing a phone, another layer of security is available to the student. If they need help, it is very easy to content family or seek emergency help. It is also an assurance for the parents. Being able to call your children and knowing where they are helps relieve stress. Text messages can also make communication direct and easy. GPS tracking is also available for parents who would like to keep eyes on their children’s location. Using GPS provides peace of mind, and in case of a missing, GPS can help track the last known location to get better understand of their whereabouts. Phones can also easily store phone numbers. If a student encounters an emergency, mobile phones can be used to call a parent or a guardian.

Online Interaction

Schools not only teach academics but also teach interaction. In the present day, face-to-face interaction is as important as online interaction. By allowing the use of mobile phones, the school can also teach them how to safely engage with others online and have a healthy relationship.

Solutions

A possible solution to restrict the use of mobile phones instead of banning them completely is to install mobile zones. Installing mobile zones on all personal devices that are brought into school blocks content or any distractions such as social media while the device is in school grounds. This also enables teachers to restrict and enable apps to incorporate phones into regular learning. This also means there is a reduction in cyberbullying and sexting while in school. The student is no longer able to use technology to harass other or be distracted from their work. Mobile zombies offer a calm approach to banning phones in schools.

Alternately, new policies could be implemented in the school that restricts the use of phone while at schools. If a student is seen with a phone or earphones during class time, the student must hand it over to the teacher for the entire day. Repeat offenders may face other consequences such as lunchtime detentions or clean-ups. This allows the students to use their devices between classes and eliminates distractions during lessons.
