Most people regard and view lateness as a minor and pardonable offense, but in reality it has a major impact and can have consequences. Being late communicates more than just having a minor setback, it speaks volumes about your character as a whole, and it has the ability to negatively affect the success and operations of a mission. It also creates an unfavorable reputation which can hinder your placement in the workforce and future opportunities. When individuals are not punctual and are late they cause a lot of inconvenience to other employees and team members, as well as leadership.
It forces and requires for other employees to pick up your slack and carry your weight which lowers moral and work ethic, due to being over worked from lack of required personnel. Being punctual is important for numerous reasons, all of which can be applied to both military and civilian life, as well as your work life and social life. I think it is important because it shows that you have respect for others.
If someone is consistently late to events it shows others around them that they have little or no respect for others and their time. Time is a valuable thing and it should be viewed as such.
In the civilian work force, staff punctuality is a critical component of a successful business. This is because managers need to rely on staff members to be at work on time and do their job. If managers cannot rely on staff members to be on time, then they cannot know for sure that certain work responsibilities will be taken care of.
It also creates a burden and inconvenience on other employee’s who have to take over your resposiblities as well attending to their own work and responsibilities. Consistently tardy employees can have a strong negative impact a business because of this. Bad business etiquette can ruin a company and business relationships. Being late can have a serious ripple effect as well that may impact many different aspects of an event. If you fail to complete a task it may delay someone else from doing their job. If you arrive late it may set back the timeline defined for the event day.
For example, if an employee is late or absent from work and the company doesn’t have enough people or time to fill the spot, than they lose productivity and time. An employee who isn’t working when he’s supposed to is an immediate loss of productivity. Routine interruption may throw other employees off, particularly those who rely on the late employee to do parts of their jobs. It might take longer for the task to be completed. If there is not enough people on a sales floor or cash register, than the needs of the customers aren’t being met which sets a bad reputation for the store and buisness. For an inventory company whoes main job is to count the merchandise in a store, having every member who is scheduled to be there for that project is crucial. If an employee doesn’t show up for work than they’re down a counter and the job of inventorying the company will take longer. This not only puts a strain on the other team members who have to make up for your lost time, but it makes the company look bad. Being late also makes you difficult to work with. When you repeatedly fall behind on a project you become viewed by your peers and coworkers as unprofessional. Over time this lack of effort and attention to your responsibilities will impact your entire team and they may want to avoid working with you, or be unable to trust you with any responsiblity. Over time, you dvelops a poor reputation. This will be extremely hard to recover from and could leave a negative impact on future employment.
Being late can also result in a lost of opportunities. Being late is a very easy way to lose your current and potential clients and or job opportunities, such as promotion. If you don’t deliver certain services on time or if you fail to be punctual for meetings or events than you will struggle to keep your business up and running. You might also miss the chance to make a great first impression on a potential future employer, or could lose the recommendation of other vendors or people in the industry.During an event there are many people attending who will be sure to notice your ability to manage your time and your event team’s schedule. If you do a great job you will most likely obtain additional business, but if you drop the ball and run behind, you may be missing out on future opportunities.
Punctuality in a military environment is especially crucial as it enables and ensures that tasks and missions are completed when they are meant to, and allows for leaders to conduct accountability. In the military, being on time goes far beyond the simple act of following orders, it saves lives. Not only your life, but the lives of those who are around you and rely on you to do your job. Aside from trust and reliability, any good military unit needs a high level of esprit de corps; a true desire to be there and to perform not only for yourself, but for your fellow soldiers as well. When a unit has a soldier that does not appear to want to be there, it can severally affect its morale and overall performance. Not to mention the time that is lost to correct you, or retrain. When you fail to arrive on time it shows everyone around you that you lack commitment.
This might come across as a lack of dedication to your job, your fellow soldiers or leadership. When you don’t show passion and devotion to your job you can bring down the energy levels and of those around you. Not being punctual shows that you’re undisciplined, which makes leadership have to limit and restrict the things that your are allowed to do as you’re untrustworthy to get a job done or completed. It is unfair to all others involved when these circumstances arise and vital time is taken from those who are doing the right thing. Your team wants to know that they can trust you to do your job, or to count on you to be where you need to be. It is easy to establish and inspire this form of trust by simply doing what you are supposed to , when you are supposed to, at the right time.
Accountability and punctuality is one of the most vital aspects and fundamentals of the military. It not only brings personal responsibility, but it also shows the organization of a unit. There are many reasons why being on time or punctual is important. The Army depends solely on its soldiers – from enlisted, Warrant Officers, and Commissioned Officers alike. The military would not be anything, or be able to do anything effectively, without the soldiers. When soldiers aren’t there to perform their assigned duties or they are late to them, then the unit looses efficiency, time, and or money if training or tasks have to be canceled. Time management is a very large part of being successful, military or civilian. Under the rigid and disciplined structure of military life there is no margin for error, especially in time management. The slightest hint of hesitation or procrastination can result in the tragic loss of lives, property, or classified information. There are many circumstances where a failure to be prompt could have dire consequences. Under certain circumstances not arriving for guard duty at the designated time could allow a breach of security that could ultimately result in the lost of lives, property, or protected information.
Another example, which also has consequences, is reporting late to morning formation. Leaders use this time to conduct accountability of their soldiers to ensure that they are alive and well. Formation is also used to push out important information regarding the daily tasks or upcoming events. Being late or absent to formation causes leadership to waste time finding out your whereabouts and if you are safe. This takes away time from conducting PRT or other morning tasks that need to get done. Being late to a convoy , patrol, or other crucial task may set the mission behind, or have the team leave without you. This puts them at risk as there might not be someone to take your place; one less person in the fight and one less person to do your specific job task. Punctuality, being an essential part of military discipline, does have a direct correlation to the soldierly appearance and combat readiness of a unit. Discipline in the military is just as sacred as keeping time. Both are essential and needed for an effective work force.
On the management side. Allowing one or more employees to come in late frequently can undermine the employer’s management team as well as set a bad example. It may give the illusion of favoritism or that double standards are in place. Other employees may begin to feel as if the rules don’t apply to them because the the late employee is constantly late and nothing happens to them. They may begin to come in late themselves. When management consistently lets someone slide, other employees may lose respect for the people in charge as they won’t take them seriously or feel that there is no consequence. This may become a gate way to further regulations or rules being broken.
Direct communication is the key to achieving punctuality as well as being cognizant and or mindful of other’s appointments and assignments. Schedules need to be pushed out at a timely manner in order for your work force to be able to show up on a timely manner. Scheduling for a task to take place during the same time as other assignments, or when you know that someone has been tasked with something else, is likely to cause complications. You can’t expect for someone to be in two places at once. In the same likeness, you cannot expect for someone to know exactly where and when to be someplace when they’re not properly told. Be direct and forthcoming. Having to rely on the word of month of other employee’s is not only inconvenient and time consuming, but also the information is not always accurate. Being organized is a two way street. The employer has to be organized in order for the employee to be.
In conclusion, being late can impact not only your event or job, but your reputation, event team and your future career. Poor time management is something that is a big negative in any aspect of your job or life and if you plan to succeed in any industry you must make timing and promptness a top priority. The most valuable resource available to us is our time. If we waste time, we can never get it back. To use our time as responsibly as possible, time management must be one of our daily priorities, and the skill of time management and planning will help us to do this. Part of time management is punctuality. This is the practice of being on time, performing tasks or meeting people at the official appointed time. By engaging in these two tasks, you can boost your daily productivity. Developing skills to effectively manage your time will bring forth improvements to your work ethic and organization on a dramatic scale. You must be accepting to making fundamental changes and willing to take fault where fault is due. You have to learn to prioritize and set reasonable and sensible goals for yourself and a realistic timeline in which to complete them in. Setting alarms will ensure timelines aren’t missed and keeping a detailed schedule of upcoming events and appointments will ensure that each one is met on time – and that you’re where you need to be.
