Equality 7-2521: We and I

Mankind is one in this world. In this world there is only "WE" not "I" because individually is the biggest sin. When Equality 7-2521 enters the world everything changes. He is different from the others and is frowned upon for it. Equality 7-2521 becomes a street sweeper whose biggest sin is to acquire personal ambition. A world where there is only "WE" is no world at all.

In the beginning Equality 7-2521 describes how he is different from everyone else. He tells how he defies the rules of the higher people.

Equality 7-2521 ends up as a street sweeper which he thinks is punishment for his sin. He wanted to be punished for this so he wouldn't do it again but it doesn't work. This triggers his actions to understand himself more. For his actions and sin he causes others to fall in his forbidden actions and ends up getting them to side with him. Equality, having a big desire to learn more by what was learned by the Council, which was a threat to conformity.

He hides in a tunnel from the unmentionable times in order to hide from the Council.

Equality 7-2521 is gaining his independence, because of his virtuous feelings, and running from the society's judgements of self-creativity. He starts to show that he does not approve the laws of the Council, allows him to be happy as a individual. In the book Equality says,

"It is not good to feel too much joy nor to be glad that our body lives but we Equality 7-2521 are happy to be living" (Rand18).

This quote shows that the narrator breaks the law, and doesn't want to stop because he's starting to believe that his thoughts are morally correct. His very first motivation that gives him an idea to what real happiness is, was gaining feelings for this 17 year old girl, called The Golden One.

While he was in the tunnel he recreates lightning. Equality 7-2521 decides that the invention is not a considered sin to the Council but the basis for a successful world for mankind. The Council's rejection of Equality 7-2521 invention and their longing to get rid of it, triggered Equality 7-2521 to run away from the society. He runs into the forest and has a moment while lying in the grass and laughing. He realizes how different he his while he can act more as an individual than as "WE". While walking through the forbidden forest, Equality 7-2521 realizes that the Golden One has been following him. After a while they find a house from the Unmentionable times Equality says

"Now I see the face of God, and I raise this God over the earth, this God whom men have sought since men came into this being, this God who will grant them peace, joy, and pride. This God, this one word "I" (Rand45).

Making a decision proves that he always wanted to make choices for himself. Equality is now officially aware of himself.

Equality 7-2521 separates himself from the rest of mankind and his new life starts. As he learns more of the Unmentionable times he plans to make the world better where there is no "WE" but only "I". And as he etches the word EGO into a rock he starts a new generation. A world where there is only "WE" is no world at all.
