Local Area Network

Categories: Network

A local area network is a group of associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link and typically share the resources of a single processor or server within a small geographic area (for example, within an office building). Usually, the server has applications and data storage that are shared in common by multiple computer users. A local area network may serve as few as two or three users (for example, in a home network) or many as thousands of users such as a large bank.

A typical LAN set up would be as given below ,also note the components that constitute the LAN Network.

A bank can use a LAN network more intensively to cover its organizational needs by adding more clusters to its main network. A small toy company would too use this type of a network because of the flexibility this sought of a network provides. This type of a network is cost efficient as it gives all PC's access to one common printer or scanner, so you don't have to install individual hardware for every computer.

Wide Area Network In a Wide Area Network the region covered could be on the national level or on the international scale. This type of a network uses Microwave and satellite transmissions to cover the region.

International banks are likely to use this network because they can communicate to all their branches spread across the globe. A small toy manufacturing company wouldn't use this type of a network because it is expensive and does not serve their purpose.

A typical wide area network layout is as below As we can the backbone or a resource for a LAN could be the high speed backbone of A Wide area network. So a Multinational bank would use both types of networks ,LAN for connecting its local offices internally, and WAN to inter connect all their branches and offices.

So telecommunications is more important to a multinational bank such as Natwest ,because it needs accurate and up to date information on its customers recent transactions or changes so to provide a better customer service. Whilst a small toy manufacturing company would use a Local area network to get information such as the its recent sales, purchases etc. The use of telecommunications is more significant to a international bank than to a small toy manufacturing company. LAN & WAN is broad networking solutions to the organizations ,In more specific terms a network has to be laid out logically and then a physical design.

There are five different types of network layouts as seen in the diagram below. Diag. 4(Elliot & Starkings, p259) An International bank and a small toy manufacturing company would both use the Bus structured layout because it is advantageous in a way that if one computer fails it wont affect the entire network so this type of network is more robust and less vulnerable. Moreover this network connects all possible devices and peripherals by means of coaxial cable or fibre optics. Internet Uses by the organizations.

An international bank such as Natwest uses the internet to provide online banking , which means a customer of the bank can access his accounts online ,and has all the facilities to transfer, to withdraw an pay bills online. Today almost 53% of Natwest customers users use online banking to access their accounts from home. In future Natwest will provide online applications for mortgages and loans etc. A small toy manufacturing company would use the internet for selling its products online through its websites or its retail channels in the web. It could also use the internet to conduct online surveys for new products or its recent products.

They could also use the internet for business to business that is gain big orders from big retailers . More extensive use of internet could lower the cost of communication by this organization. In conclusion both these organizations have major differences in terms of size of their respective business ,in terms of their usages of their information systems, in terms of gathering resources and finally the workforce they employ. A international bank such as Natwest provides banking services to the public ,being international it has a workforce of 40000+ employees.

It uses Wide area network to interconnect its entire business, an information system is the second resource for the bank as it relies heavily on the information, which is stored into its information systems . Finally a bank needs well qualified and skillful employees to handle large workloads. In case of a small toy manufacturing company it is involved in manufacturing and selling of toys so its in the primary sector. Its use of information system isn't all that necessary but it complements its organization. It employees local labour and not necessarily qualified.
