William Peters was born in 1738 in New York City. He was the son of a successful merchant and was educated in the best schools available. He graduated from Yale College in 1757 and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1760 and began practicing law. In 1761, he married Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of a wealthy New York City merchant. They had four children together.Peters was a successful lawyer and became a partner in his father-in-law’s business. He also became involved in politics and was elected to the New York Assembly in 1768. He served in the Assembly until 1776, when he was elected to the Continental Congress. He served in Congress until 1783, when he returned to New York. He served in the New York State Senate from 1784 to 1786. In 1788, he was a delegate to the New York Constitutional Convention. He was a member of the New York Ratifying Convention in 1788, which ratified the United States Constitution.
William Peters was an important figure in the development of the American West. He was a pioneer in the use of irrigation to transform the arid landscape into productive farmland. His work helped to make the American West a viable region for agriculture and settlement. William Peters was a man of vision and determination who helped to shape the American West.
