Tillie Olsen is an American writer and social activist. She is best known for her short stories and novels about working-class women. Olsen was born in Nebraska to a family of immigrants from Russia. She dropped out of high school to work in a cannery and later a factory. She also worked as a maid and a farm laborer. In the 1930s, she became involved in the Communist Party and the labor movement. She later joined the American Communist Party.
Tillie Olsen’s writing is important because it gives a voice to the voiceless. It gives a face to the faceless. It gives hope to the hopeless.
