Thomas More was born in London on February 7, 1478. He was the son of Sir John More, a successful lawyer and judge who later became one of the Lord Chancellors of England. Thomas was educated at St. Anthony’s School in London and at Oxford University. He became a lawyer like his father, but he also wrote plays and poetry. In 1516, he wrote the book Utopia, which described an imaginary perfect society. More was a good friend of the king’s, but he opposed the king’s divorce from his first wife. As a result, More was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was tried for treason and executed in 1535.
Thomas More’s writing is significant because it offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a man who was both highly intelligent and deeply religious. His thoughts on politics, religion, and society are still relevant today, and his work is essential reading for anyone interested in these topics.
