Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943) was an American writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. He is best known for his short story The Devil and Daniel Webster” and his epic poem “John Brown’s Body”.Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Benet was the son of James Walker Benet, a lawyer and judge, and his wife, Caroline.
The family was of Irish Catholic descent. Benet’s father pushed him to excel academically, and he was a bright student. He graduated from Yale University in 1919 with a degree in English.After graduation, Benet worked as a journalist for The New York Times and The Nation. He also began to write fiction. His first book, Five Men and a Locomotive, was published in 1924.In 1926, Benet married Rosemary Carr.
The couple had two children, William and Stephen.Benet’s most famous work, “The Devil and Daniel Webster”, was published in 1928. The story, about a man who sells his soul to the devil, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1929.Benet’s other notable works include the epic poem “John Brown’s Body” (1928) and the novel “Western Star” (1943).Benet died of a heart attack in 1943, at the age of 44.”
