Søren Kierkegaard is a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote extensively on topics relating to Christianity, morality, ethics, psychology, and aesthetics. His work influenced many subsequent philosophers, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus. Kierkegaard was born into a wealthy family in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, Michael Pedersen Kierkegaard, was a well-to-do wool merchant who came from a long line of prosperous farmers. His mother, Ane Sørensdatter Lund Kierkegaard, was a devoutly religious woman who came from a poor family. Kierkegaard was the youngest of seven children, four of whom died in infancy.
