Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who was influential in the development of critical pedagogy. He is best known for his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, which has been translated into over 20 languages and has been influential in the field of education and social justice. Freire was born in Recife, Brazil, in 1921. He was the son of a poor family and did not have the opportunity to attend school until he was 15 years old. He later attended the University of Recife, where he studied philosophy and history. After graduation, he became a professor at the university. In the 1960s, Freire became involved in the Brazilian literacy campaign, which was designed to help adults learn to read and write. The campaign was successful, and Freire’s methods were soon adopted by other countries. In the 1970s, Freire was exiled from Brazil after the military dictatorship took power. He eventually settled in Chile, where he worked as an adviser to the government on education reform. He returned to Brazil in the 1980s and continued to work as an educator and activist until his death in 1997.
Paulo Freire’s work has had a profound impact on the field of education. His ideas about critical pedagogy, liberatory education, and the role of education in social change have been influential in shaping educational theory and practice. Freire’s work continues to inspire educators and activists who are committed to working for social justice.
